Chapter 5: Parents Just Don't Understand
Have you ever heard of the song, "Parents Just Don't Understand" by DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince?

If not, then you can probably guess that the song is about teenagers revolting against their parents' strict rules.

When you were fifteen, have you ever been grounded before? Did your parents give you an ear sore about not applying yourself in school?

Well, if the Phoenix siblings were real, then they would be more than happy to take your place.

Because as soon as Brooke opened the door, Mr. and Mrs. Phoenix entered inside without acknowledging the girl's presence.

"Johnny?" growled Mrs. Phoenix. "Where on earth is your sister?"

Standing close to the kitchen stove was Caleb, mixing the egg batter and melted butter in the frying pan. His red spatula glides across the surface, smoothing out the lumps.

Johnny's brilliant red cheeks matched the color of his unbuttoned flannel shirt.

A dark-gray T-shirt concealed his stomach while his baggy, denim jeans suppressed his bare legs.

Nervous, he opens his mouth to speak when Nessa entered the living room, soaking wet.

Her drenched hair creates warm puddles on the soft brown kitchen floor, causing Nessa to almost slip.

But thankfully, her fallen beach towel prevented Nessa from harming herself.

"Oh, hi Mom and Dad." she greets awkwardly.

"I didn't expect you guys to arrive so early."

Nessa picks up her fallen beach towel, wraps it around her body, and became a victim of her parents' vicious glares.

"Oh, crap." she thought.

The awkward family reunion reminded Nessa of her unpleasant quinceañera.

"Why are you soaking wet?" Mrs. Phoenix asked her in wonder.

Nessa stares down at her wet bathing suit. "I went out for a morning swim."

Mr. Phoenix studies his flustered daughter's face, then tells her to go upstairs and get dressed.

"You too, Caleb."

Quickly shutting off the fire, Caleb ducks under the stove and skulks upstairs, so he can put on some pants.

In the meantime, Brooke and Johnny lead the couple over to the sea-green living room couches.

A flat-screen TV was glued against the warm plywood. Across the living room was a large window revealing sand dunes and the ocean.

Watching the tides wash over the sand, Brooke thought about her terrifying dream last night.

"Who was that little girl?" she wonders. "And what was that monster who almost clawed her face?"

Scampering downstairs was Caleb and Nessa dressed in their casual clothes.

Nessa wears a white tank top, a pair of bright orange plaid pants, and black Doc Martens.

Secured around her neck is a black laced choker; she made careful strides along the tiled floors, letting her brown hair bounce on her back.

As for Caleb, he had on a light gray, oversized shirt, denim overalls, and leather brown boots. His dreadlocks bounced excitedly as he joins Brooke on the couch.

He tries to loosen the tension by telling cheesy jokes, but unfortunately, the couple was not in a humorous mood.

Twelve minutes later, a shameful Nessa joined the others on the sofa.

"Vanessa and Johnny," Mrs. Phoenix sighed.

"Yes, Mom-"

"WHAT WERE YOU TWO THINKING?" Mrs. Phoenix glares at Nessa and Johnny, whose faces turn red with embarrassment.

"Your father and I have received word from Brooke's parents that yesterday, you four broke into a school!"

Twiddling her thumbs, Nessa stared at her angry mother.

She has silky, black hair, almond brown eyes, and light caramel skin. Even though she sounds American, her voice is saturated with a warm Portuguese accent.

Like her husband, Victor, Esme Phoenix wears an olive-brown trench coat, long jeans, and leather black combat boots.

As I describe their attire to you, you might ask why the couple is wearing combat boots on a slightly chilly morning.

And the reason is because of the Phoenix couple are not your ordinary parents.

Victor Phoenix is a British Naval Officer who protects London from oncoming intruders. But Esme Phoenix, on the other hand, is a former MMA fighter who helps immigrants get situated in America.

They became involved in the supernatural when Esme's ex-girlfriend was kidnapped by Wendigos.

The local authorities couldn't help them; so the only person who can assist the couple is John Idlewild, the founder of the Idlewild Boarding School.

Not only did Idlewild helped Mr. and Mrs. Phoenix find their missing friend, but he taught them myths and legends they never heard of.

To repay his kind debt, Mr. and Mrs. Phoenix enrolled their intelligent children at his school.

Nessa developed a passion for mixed martial arts, firearms, archery, and knife throwing while Johnny learned how to swordfight, teleport, and hide from enemies.

But the only thing they couldn't do is hide from their parents' scowls.

Massaging his wife's shoulders, Victor Phoenix gives his children a scolding look.

"Who came up with the idea to rob a vending machine, anyway?"

His thick British accent fluttered from his lips as Mr. Phoenix took a seat in the sea-green living room couch.

Mr. Phoenix's brownish-gray hair flounced on his wide, wrinkled forehead.

Meanwhile, his narrow face looked like he hadn't eaten in days. Black strands of hair grew around his face, making him appear thirty-years-old.

Raising his hand, Caleb blurted, "It was me."

"What?" Brooke and the Phoenix family all stared at the boy in surprise.

Caleb expressed a tired sigh. "I am sorry if I have caused you and your kids any trouble."

Nessa intervened, "No! It wasn't his fault!"

Both Johnny and Brooke nod in agreement.

Mr. Phoenix threw up his hands. "Okay, then whose idea was it?"

Silence flourished above the living room.

Smells of burning chestnut made Johnny's head feel woozy.

He wasn't angry about his parents' sudden arrival; he just couldn't stop thinking about Brooke's expression when Caleb told him about her vision.

Why didn't she tell me? Johnny wondered.

He gave Brooke consent to date whoever she chooses. The least she could do is open up to him.

Not as her ex-boyfriend-but as her friend.

If it took to Johnny to stop hating Caleb for three months, then he will take an hour to listen to his dear companion.

But unfortunately, Nessa said something that made Johnny's blood boil.

"Well," began Nessa. "Here's the thing: Johnny made me, Caleb, and Brooke to break into the school."

Johnny opened his mouth in total shock.

"Say what?" he cried.

Nessa bobs her head in remorse.

"Yes, " she went on. "Johnny made us rob the school vending machine. I told him that it was a crazy idea, but-"

"No, I didn't!" Johnny hissed. "You came up with the idea, Nessa!"

Offended, Nessa crossed her arms and cocked her head to the side. "Don't hate me because I am four years younger than you."

"What does your age have to do with anything?" Caleb spoke up.

A patient Brooke advises everyone to calm down. Her brown eyes and nurturing smile alleviated the tense atmosphere.

"Brooke is right." Mr. Phoenix grinned. "Look, I understand that Nessa doesn't tell the truth."

"Ya think?" Johnny scoffed.

His father pretends he didn't hear Johnny.

"But robbing a school vending machine is an inexcusable crime!"

Both Johnny and Nessa bowed their heads awkwardly.

"We're sorry, Mom and Dad," Nessa mutters.

"We won't disappoint you ever again."

Mrs. Phoenix looks at the children for a moment and eventually relents.

"Oh, I can't stay mad at you kids." she sighs, opening her arms.

"Come here."

Grinning, the Phoenix siblings hugged their parents while Brooke and Caleb thought about their own families.

Brooke is aware that her parents are somewhere in Africa, helping Nelson Mandela with his political affairs. But as for Caleb's folks, they were nowhere to be found.

In fact, Caleb doesn't know anything about his real parents. When he was a child, Caleb lived in a brutal neighborhood in Harlem, New York.

He steals food from the garbage cans and slept in discarded cardboard boxes until the sun came up.

What Caleb loved about mind-reading is that he helped him distinguish between friend and foe.

On some occasions, he joins street gangs so they can teach him the tricks of the trade.

Caleb used to rob stores, vandalize restaurants, and pickpocket from clueless civilians.

And even though he was skilled with firearms, Caleb never hurt an innocent person. In fact, he is the only person in his gang who hates unnecessary killing.

One day he was fending himself off from strangers, and the next, Caleb was placed into a foster home where his adopted family enrolled him in the Idlewild Boarding School.

There, he met Brooke, made new friends, and became involved in the supernatural community. Speaking of Brooke, she hasn't spoken a word since Mr. and Mrs. Phoenix arrived.

Brushing his fingers against his girlfriend's hand, Caleb studies the ghastly color on her face, then encourage her to speak up.

"I don't know, Caleb," she mutters doubtfully.

"What if they don't believe me? What if my dream is-"

"Stop doubting yourself, " Caleb insists.

"You are the smartest person I have ever met. And besides, if they don't believe you, fuck them."

"Sweetest. Boyfriend. Ever." she thinks, blushing.

Gripping his hand, Brooke clears her throat and finally tells the others about the vision she had from last night.

"A vision?" Nessa stops hugging her mother and frowns at her best friend.

"What is it about?" asked Johnny.

"It was foggy," she recalled.

"I walked on this long pier that took me to this freezing lake. Suddenly, I saw this girl's reflection in the water."

Brooke had to pause because she can still feel the chills slithering down her back.

"What happened next?"Caleb frowns as he massages her shoulders.

"I wanted to reach out to her, but then a monster hand grabbed my face and pulled me into the water."

Everyone became silent for a moment.

The description of Brooke's vision became unbearable for Mrs. Phoenix to hear, but no one questioned her precognitive abilities.

After a while, Mr. Phoenix got up from the couch and thanked Brooke for telling them.

"Okay," began Nessa. "But what does her vision mean?"

Mrs. Phoenix looks at her husband and sighed, "I don't know, but this is something we need to check it out."

"As for you four, analyze Brooke's mysterious vision." Mr. Phoenix instructed. "But do it quietly, the last thing we need is a couple of bigots ruining our mission."

Johnny squinted at his father strangely.

"You're not coming with us?" he implied with a diminished frown.

Mr. Phoenix ruffles his son's hair. "We have business affairs to attend to, but I know your kids can take care of yourselves."

His wife smiled in agreement, kissing Nessa on her forehead.

"If you need anything, just give us a call." she insisted.

"Okay." the children respond in unison.

As soon as the adults left the beach house, Johnny turns his head over to his friends.

"Everyone, get ready. We'll leave in an hour."

Caleb, Nessa, and Brooke exchange weird look at one another.

"I am sorry, where are we going?" scowled Caleb.

"We are going to see if anyone needs our help."

"And if they don't?" Nessa asks coyly.

Johnny did a sigh. "Brooke believes that something bad is going to happen, and we can't just sit there and twiddle our thumbs."

"We have to do something."

"Okay, then," Nessa hops up from the couch and stretched her arms. "I'll get my gun and throwing knives."

"I'll get my twin pistols," said Caleb, gliding his butt off the couch cushions.

"Don't just take weapons," Brooke sighed.

"We need money as well."

Johnny slides his hands into his pockets, bobbing his head. "Brooke is right. The sooner we grab some cash, the sooner we find food."

And so, everyone heads upstairs where they collected their money and weapons, then returned downstairs.

Brooke wears thin, black sunglasses, a white, daisy-printed babydoll dress with long, black shorts and silver ballet flats.

A black hat sat on the top of her silky brown hair while tightening her small waist was a navy blue jacket.

In the meantime, Johnny wears a black Soundgarden T-shirt, ripped jeans, and dark red Converse sneakers. Sticking out of his black backpack is his trusty katana.

After the children reload their guns, they hid them away in their back pockets and prepare themselves breakfast.

After tucking her leather whip and pistol inside her white purse, Brooke watched Caleb cook the eggs on the stove and grinned.

"Ooh," she smirked. "I didn't know my cute boyfriend is a culinary artist."

Caleb smiles as he kissed her lips. "I am full of surprises, babe."

"Can I pitch in?" she beamed.

"Knock yourself out."

Nessa rolled her eyes at their loving embrace.

"Will you two just get a room?" she asks impatiently.

Brooke and Caleb ignored her.

And so, the children got to work. Nessa brought out the plates, bacon, and packaged bread while Caleb resumed cooking the soft yellow batch of eggs.

But little did they know, an omniscient storm cloud was waiting for them outside.
