A week after arriving in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Maira Hernandez (age 21) discovers Daniel Martinez's (age 21) tinder profile via her best friend Ashley White age 20. Soon after the discovery Maira would search through Daniel's phone and find the messages and profiles of the woman who had matched with Daniel. According to Ashley White, Maira displayed odd and sometimes "terrifying fits of rage" and according to Ashley, Maira was never a violent person, in fact Ashley states "Maira was just a normal and happy person, who I believed was incapable of harming a fly".

Accounts of what happened later vary but according to the sister of Daniel, Maria Martinez (age 18), Maira had texted Daniel to meet her at her home at approximately eight in the evening and quickly sent another text containing a slew of "happy faced emojis". Maria also states that "he seemed surprised and happy, he quickly got up from the couch and left, I never said anything but I wish I did...I...It was the last time I saw him"

The following account is based on the autopsy of Daniel Martinez. According to the coroner, Daniel had, had a long night. He and Maira cleary had sex for hours, and he had clearly ejaculated several times. When we asked psychologist Lindsay Anderson "I believe she [Maira] wanted to have a final night of pleasure, she wanted to know if she could possibly forgive him, but I think that during the end of their time together she realized that she couldn't, she clearly became enraged, possibly because she started to think about all girls Daniel cheated on her with, how he had sex with them in possibly the same way he had sex with her, this amalgamation of thoughts is what led to the killing". Shortly after finishing, Maira walked into her kitchen and picked out the sharpest knife in the lot. She walked towards a sleeping Daniel, crawled on top of him and positioned the knife in the air and aimed, she paused for a second and possibly contemplated what she was doing, after which she stabbed Daniel sixty-seven times in the face, and preceded to remove his genitalia. After which she grabbed Daniel's phone in order to find the woman. What proceeds is New Mexico's most violent and brutal serial killings.
