Chapter seven: The queen
“I thought I was the only one! Didn't I come here for this stupid ball thingy?”
Adrian looked at me like I was an idiot. “Only children under the age of 19 can attend as one of the Electi, Annalise. The queen will be in a attendance but she will not dance the dance of the four brothers.”
Oh. Because that made sense. “What’s an Electi?”
He rolled his eyes. “It’s Latin for chosen. Have you not studied the language? It's the primary tongue of our people, sister.”
Well, excuse me for not knowing a dead language.
"Do I have to study it? Latin is hard." I whined."When am I gonna get to leave?”
“Soon, sister.” The queen replied.
“Right! People here never tell me anything, because my tiny brain wouldn't be able to comprehend!” I shouted. I stormed out of the room. Adrien followed me. He grabbed my by my shirt collar and got real close.
“You’ll go in there, now, and apologize to the queen!” He shouted in my face.
“Adrien.” The queen said. “do not treat my sister, the princess, like that.” She said it so calmly. She walked over to us with all the elegance a queen should have.
This bitch was not my sister and I wasn’t going to let her act like it.
“Fuck off. I don't need you.” is what I would have liked to have said. Instead, I said “Just leave me alone. ” I said coldly. “Oh, and my real brother would never dream of treating me like that.” I said to Adrien. He looked back at me, hurt at my saying he wasn't my real brother. He’ll just have to deal with it.
I stormed off to my room and locked the door.
I flopped onto the bed and stared at the ceiling, contemplating what had just happened. I had a big brother. I was a princess. I had a big sister. Thinking about it all made me miss my old life, which seemed like forever ago. I curled up into a ball and cried. I cried for my lost sister, for my brother, for my big sister, for my crown, for everything that had just happened.
I just want to be normal, I thought.
“Are you okay?” Death. I had almost forgotten about her.
“Yeah. I’ll be fine.” I replied.
And, I decided, I would be okay.
