It was a chilly night in the big city. The sky was covered in clouds and the ground was wet from the rain that ended not so long ago, so the moon was hidden.
Sound of steps. And the phone call.
-Yeah, I know, father. New city. Big city. Not our forest. I will be cautious. I know, really, you don’t have to repeat. Erica this, Erica that… I’m aware of my name. - A girl sighed. - Late? - She frowned and looked around. - A little bit… Yeah, okay, I’m looking forward to meeting you too, but my first year in the university is just beginning and… - She almost bumped into a man.
-Look where…
-Sorry. - She whispered and quickly ran away without even a look at the man’s face.
-Wait, you really…
-I can’t go back home, dad. Friends? - She stopped. - Of course, I have friends. - She smiled falsely and continued walking by the deserted street. - Yup, I love you too. Bye.
Erica stopped again and looked at the display of her smartphone. It was pretty late, so she should have going faster, but it seemed that during the phone call she lost her way. She raised her eyes, saw the street lights, clouds, and one lonely bird.
-Where am I…? - Her eyes widened as she found herself unable to find the right way in the unknown city. She looked on her phone, but, of course, pointless. Because there were like 10% of the battery. She quickly opened the maps, typed her destination, and just managed to see that she should turn left and go through a park when the phone completely died.
Erica patted her red head with her hand.
-If I knew I was going to sleep in the park, I would have put on a sports costume or something. A dress and a coat… - She felt that her hands were getting colder and colder.
Erica sighed again and with no choice, she went to the park.
Does everybody know how the park with no lights looks like at night? Like a lord of darkness in the robe of leaves. Every normal human would think twice before going into the depth of the dark and scary forest. But Erica was like:
-To die or not to die. - And then she entered the park.
The red-haired woman knew that casually walking in the pure darkness without any source of light is a bit dangerous. A little bit…
But who cares. She shrugged her shoulders.
Sound of steps behind her back and she frozed.
To die or not to die…
Those steps were getting closer and closer, while Erica wasn’t able to make a single move. The unknown person stand just behind her and whispered.
-Where are you going?
She blinked.
-Hell, I suppose.
-Frankly, girl, I’m not going to kill you. - The man laughed.
Only then Erica found the power to turn around and look at that strange person.
Handsome strange person...
She rolled her eyes, turned around, and went away.
-Really? Not even a question? A scared look on the face? Nothing?
A guy - almost her age - tucked his a bit long, as for a boy, hair behind his ear.
-So you remembered me? - He followed her with a sarcastic smile on his face.
A couple of minutes of walking in silence and another question.
-What about now?
Erica stopped and looked at this guy.
-I’m stucked in the night park with a suspicious man in cool glasses, without a phone, and without any knowledge of the way back home. If you want to hurt me, do it now. If not - give me your phone.
He smiled.
-You insulted me, forgot me, complimented my glasses and now you are robbing me. I didn’t know that beautiful girls in green dresses and black coats are professional robbers. That’s your main job, Rica?
-Ri… Who? - She stepped back. - How do you know my name? Stalker?
-Look, I’m not asking you to marry me, I’m just saying your name, nothing special. - He propped the glasses on his nose. - I already said that you know me too. You just have a wonderful - not actually - memory. Rica.
-Eri.
-Rica.
-Eri.
-Rica. - He smiled mockingly.
-You know, that I don’t like that, right?
-Yeah, pretty much.
-Can you just get off of me?
-Nope.
-Then help me find a way.
-Let’s play Q&A.
-I don’t usually talk to strange people. And you are the one. - Erica exhaled and saw her breath in the air. It was cold here.
-Questions and answers. You start.
-What’s your name?
-Marcus.
-Don’t know any Marcuses.
-My turn. When did you change your hairstyle? Red suits you.
-That’s creepy, man, that’s creepy. The day before yesterday. Why are you doing this?
-Let’s go for a walk.
-If you are not going to answer, just pay the price. Marcus.
They started walking together.
-What kind of price? - he asked.
-A. Way. To. My. Home.
-Okay. - He lifted his hands in a sign of defeat. Marcus took the phone out of his pocket. - Address?
-So you are doing these to know the location of my house. - She stated.
-Nope.
-25 Green St.
He opened the Google maps and found the place she needed.
-We should go forward, then there will be the end of the park.
-And my home is, - She glanced at his phone. - turn left, right, then two hundred meters forward… I can’t remember.
-I told you you have a terrible memory?
-Yup.
-Okay then.
-Just tell me where is the North and I will go.
He said “Sure”, looked at the Google maps, and saw his phone dying.
-2%... - Erica smiled. - So what, my dear savior, we are stuck here forever alone?
-Do you know how to define “fear”?
-Not actually. Let’s just go to the exit. It is somewhere there.
Marcus smiled and followed her.
-So you are new to this city too? - Erica asked.
-Actually, I’m studying here for the first month.
-Me too!
-What a coincidence.
-Can I hear the note of sarcasm in that statement?
-It’s made of sarcasm.
-So when did I insulted you, my dear?
-Don’t call me like that. It’s not like I’m your pet. Rica.
-Eri.
-Rica.
-So when?
-You bumped into me a couple of minutes ago.
-Oh, I supposed that it were you. But you knew me before that.
-Of course, I know you. Daughter of the forester that can’t find a way in the park. Funny.
-My former classmate?
-Nope. You spilled your coffee at me a week ago.
-Oh. We are from the same university.
-Exactly.
-The same group?
-The same group.
They saw the exit gates.
-It was nice to meet you. Again. But it doesn’t change a thing. We are still in an unknown place without our phones. - He sighed.
Erica just lifted her head to the sky. At that moment she could see the stars and the moon because clouds were gone.
-You know, there is something, even a forester’s daughter knows.
-Surprise me.
-How to navigate using the stars.
Erica smiled and took a step out of the park.
-Wait, Eri! Help me too!
