the girl was looking down at her book when i entered the room with austin. we slid back to the last benches, in the far corner of the room. she didn't look up, but i saw her back relax as i sat down.

mr. brown was a pretty chill teacher. he let us have random discussions about anything that interested us, so it was an easy hour. today, he gave us a chapter to read, and discuss amongst ourselves what we thought about it, so everyone was talking at the top of their voices.

i was a pretty fast reader, but austion wasn't, so i waited as he meticulously trudged through the hidden secrets of america's top writers.

and somehow my eyes land on that girl. again.

her back tenses in the same instant, however, and i look away.

to look back at her again.

its my turn to freeze this time, because she's looking right at me, her brown; beautifully chocolate brown eyes wide. my eyes drop down to my lap immediately, and i start shaking my legs in nervousness.

"dude, stop that." austin says, distracted, and totally unaware of the mystical exchange i just shared with mind reader girl.

wait.

a.

second.

mind reader.

"hey, aussy?"

"stop the shaking, dude!" he says.

"what was kaleb saying about mind readers?" i ask, willing my legs to stop.

"what?"

"about mind readers? what was he saying? how do you know who is one?"

this time he looks at me and gives me a blank stare.

"you okay, dude?"

"aussy, try to remember. please." i say, staring straight ahead. my left knee twitches a little.

"something about screaming as loud as you can? in your head? dude what's going on?"

"nothing. are you done reading?"

"in the last paragraph dude. jeez."

i chance a look at the girl again. her back is facing me now, and she's hunched pretty low over her book.

now, i think.

one.

two.

three.

SCREAM!

the girl jumps out of her seat, mumbles an excuse at mr. brown, and rushes out of the room as if it were on fire. we stare at the door as it slings back behind her.

mind reader.
