I am a survivor of a suicide attempt off the San Fransisco Golden Gate Bridge. I feel lucky to be alive every single day. As I am the 1% who has survived. I was born off drugs, and premature. I bounced around home to home, nobody wanted to keep me because I was sick. And then I got lucky. I landed in the home of Patrick and Debra Hines.
Depression, delusions, paranoia- these conditions drove me to attempt suicide, but I survived. Today I am on a mission to save others, stating with my new documentary and a plan to create a Golden Gate Bridge suicide barrier net.
“Jump now,” said the voice in my head. “And I did. I was compelled to die.”
I leaped over a rail on the Golden Gate Bridge in September of 2000 and began a freefall that would reach 75 miles per hour on impact. The moment my fingers left the railing, I felt instant regret.
"I thought it was too late, I said to myself, ‘What have I done, I don’t want to die‘,” I said, “I realized I made the greatest mistake of my life." I fell about 240 feet in just four seconds. I crashed feet first into the waters below, crushing spinal vertebrae and breaking an ankle. But I survived. Now, I travel the world to speak about suicide.
I am one of only thirty-six (less than 1%) to survive the fall and the only Golden Gate Bridge jump survivor who is actively spreading the message of living mentally healthy around the globe. In 2016, Mental Health America awarded me their highest honor, The Clifford W. Beers Award for his efforts to improve the lives and attitudes toward people with mental illnesses. Previously, I was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Council of Behavioral Health in partnership with Eli Lilly. I have also been awarded by SAMSHA as a Voice Awards Fellow and Award Winner, an Achievement Winner by the US Veterans Affairs and received over 30 U.S. military excellence medals as a civilian.
