Hi, I am Mindy. I am a survivor of the LA Jewish Community Center shooting in 1999.
I was working as a camp adviser when I was sixteen-years-old at the Community Center.
As I and my friends walked into the front of the building, a large man walked in and started shooting. He shot off about seventy rounds of ammunition. He then fired at me first in my right thigh and then started spraying out bullets
He arrived on a day with many children- about 350. I lost a lot of blood, so I lay down and played dead until I heard the loud police sirens piercing my eardrums.
He shot three five-year-old kids, me, and a sixty-five-year-old receptionist who worked there.
To this day I still have a bit of shrapnel lodged in my leg from sixteen-years-ago.
It may sound strange, but I was in the right place at the right time. I was sixteen, working with little kids, protecting them and the future as a society. So if anybody says I was in the wrong place at the wrong time, he was in the wrong place at the wrong time!
I wouldn't put this on anybody...Nobody deserves this pain. On my first day of college, my dorm-mate jokingly shot me with a nerf gun. I was so traumatized and scared I was put in a psych ward. I still have panic attacks when I hear the news of a mass shooting.
