Chapter 3
The meeting ended and the elders stalked off to their separate realmed campsites.  The youths exited slowly, so as to have the opportunity to size one another up.  Though unable to utter a word in the presence of the guards, each saw none of the elders harboured ill will or resentment in one another.  All recognized the potentially united front of peace, and smiles were exchanged as they passed between their guards.
Pixie took action.  She wrote three notes and gave them to her hand-maiden who was able to pass them to the hand-maiden and man-servants of the others.  And so, each crown prince and princess made the decision to return in one month, in secret, to see if they could fare better than their parents.
No more meetings were held at that time.  Despite their arrogance, the rulers could see that no accord would be struck.  They quickly abandoned any notion of continuing with what they considered a waste of time, and returned home.
The armies resumed their battles and the lands that had been, for the few weeks of royal travel, quite safe, became perilous to any and all who attempted to travel alone.
One month passed, the heirs made their excuses and departed with only their most trusted friends, attendants and guards, for the secret meeting.
Pixie of South was the first to arrive.  For the first day she was alone with her people, during which time they explored and surveyed the bare bones of the castle.
Pixie found herself alone in the gardens on the second afternoon when she was approached by Bernard of West.  He had arrived a short while beforehand and decided to explore, whilst his people located any other arrivals.
He commended her on her initiative to bring them together and admitted that he thought her petite beauty breath-taking.  Her wise and generous demeanour had warmed his heart, just as his kindness and strength captured hers.
Bud of North and Solaris of East had met one another en route along the border between their countries.  On more than one occasion, they had saved one another from death or injury and by the time that they had reached the ruins, they had found in one another, destined soul-mates.
They met, the four of them, in the grand council chamber, so that Pixie could state the solution that she had decided upon after thorough thought and attentive reasoning.
Unions, specifically marriage, would be what she was proposing.  This very act, she explained, would combine the four kingdoms into two and then, in the next generation, another union could possibly be forged to unite all kingdoms as one.
The idea was sound and, given the recently found affections between them, was accepted and readily agreed upon with joyful anticipation.  On the spot, Bud offered his hand and kingdom to Solaris.  With an awkward shyness, Bernard followed suit, asking pixie to join him in matrimony.  Both princesses accepted with smiles upon their lips.
All embraced one another in celebration and friendship, their secret betrothal giving them the much needed and desired hope for the future of their lands, and their own personal happiness.
Planning for the future was highly perilous now, if any of their kinsmen were to discover their arrangement, not only would there be hell to pay for each heir, but the redemption of the kingdoms could be lost for good.
The ruins were where their resolution lay.  It was clear that, for the foreseeable future, none of their kin would return, under either a banner of peace or hostility, it had become the perfect location for any future rendezvous.  Not only did it provide temporary accommodation, it also laid out the foundations for a new home within which future generations could come to reside once the kingdoms were fully united.
