Maps, Beacons and Plans
After April’s warning the two of us start searching the school for the Home Ec class. (Granted that the school’s layout doesn’t shift as quickly as I’d expect, It won’t be long till we find the others…) I think as I swing a door open and find yet another misplaced room. “Thank god the traps aren’t jack-in-the-box style.” I say as I close the door and walk away. “Yeah it’d be bad if we opened a door and something jumped us out of nowhere…” April states while she closes another door she had opened herself. "Hell, we might not even be here-" I get cut off mid-sentence as I hear muffled voices coming from a classroom not too far from where I'm standing. April and I turn to look at each other and after sharing a nod we walk towards the source of the noise. I put my hand on the door and stop for a second. (That's definitely Max's voice...) As soon as I recognize my friend's familiar voice, and every doubt within me vanishes from my body, I swing the door open and come face to face with the familiar sight of our reformed home base: The Home Ec Classroom. "How do you-" I'm immediately greeted by Max and Chloe standing across from each other, in what looks like a heated argument. Max was clearly about to say something before I barged in and cut her off but now both of the girls are looking at me and April like we're aliens. "Jack?! April?! Where were you?!" Max says as she stomps towards us. "See? I told you it was nothing. They just went for a walk or something." Chloe huffs crossing her arms. "Just let them talk! Jack, can you explain? Please?" Max asks me looking like she's had enough of everything. (Damn it's too early in the day to look like that Max...) "Look. It's a lot, so what don't we sit down?" I suggest, throwing up my hands.
In the next minutes April and I proceed to explain what occurred while everybody was asleep, including our hypothesis. "A monster..?" Chloe spells out in a low voice clearly unable to process the incident. Everybody in the room goes silent for a second, while Anette looks away in thought. "Now that you mention it I do sense the darkness of the school more intensely than before..." She states bringing a hand to her chin and we all turn to her in response. "...I wonder why I didn't feel anything last night though..." She continues. "Maybe cause you were asleep?" I instinctively respond in the most logical way possible. "Maybe..." She seems to accept my answer but continues to ponder on other potential possibilities. (Man that girl...) I think as I turn to look at the others once again. "So to sum it up: The rooms shifted places inside the school, you encountered a humanoid monster, you managed to escape; and then fell asleep on the bathroom floor?" Max describes our adventures in the lamest way possible and I glare at her for a moment. "Practically yeah." I reply shortly after. "But we also learned that the school's layout is still changing, even as we speak." April points out, wearing an expression that is stark-contrast to what she has been wearing the entire time we were alone together. “You positive about that?” Max gives her a doubtful look. “100%. We saw it with our own eyes.” I reply locking eyes with her. She instantly heaves a sigh, as she realizes I’m dead serious. After all, Max can read my expressions better than anyone. “Is this for real?! Not only are we stuck in here with ghosts AND monsters, but the rooms start shifting places now too!” Chloe lets out her thoughts visibly frustrated. (And if I’m being honest I don’t really blame her. Some really f*cked up stuff have been taking place since yesterday…) “Maybe we can track down the location of the rooms or figure out a pattern…” Anette suggests, finding something new to dwell on. “Okay so we’ll need a plan; even a simple one will do.” Max speaks up as she shifts gears and goes into leader-mode at last. She then proceeds to grab something from her bag and spreads it out onto the big desk we’re all gathered around. “A map… of the school?” I inquire narrowing my eyes. “Indeed.” She replies with a smirk. “So how’s a map gonna help us?” Chloe asks, not looking too pleased. “Uhm sorry if this sounds kinda intrusive but… Max, why do you have a map of the school?” April joins in with a cringed-out smile on her face, while Anette just stares at the map quizzically. “I have it on my bag at all times so that I don’t get lost inside the school!” Max replies with a grin, looking proud of herself. I give her a questioning look with a raised brow. Silence spreads throughout the classroom as everyone exchanges glances. “What?” Max breaks the silence with a question. Not too long after, I sigh and rub my temples. “In case you didn’t hear me, HOW is a MAP gonna help US?” Chloe repeats herself. “Now now Chloe, don’t worry. I’ll explain right away!” Max keeps acting like she provided us a saving grace. “Supposedly we go with a room-by-room search, having the map of the school will help us keep track of all the rooms we’ve checked and cross off the ones that didn’t have any keys in them. That way we’ll skip over the rooms we did check, find the keys and we’ll be out of here in a jiffy!” Our self-proclaimed leader explains cheerfully. “Hmm that COULD prove useful after all.” I say stroking my jaw. “Yeah except there’s one problem.” Chloe crosses her arms. “How do we know that monster isn’t out there still? And, how will we know which classroom is which if they keep moving around?” She continues, making a very sound argument. “I’m positive the creature we encountered isn’t in the school as we speak… but you have a point regarding the classrooms…” April starts thinking, cocking her head to the side. (Maybe I misjudged Chloe due to her cheery appearance back when I first met her… She’s still got some brain cells remaining after all.) “Well if we opened a door and found a closet or a lounge we could just cross one of these off right?” I suggest instinctively. “No that won’t work. The school has multiple lounges and multiple closets, we wouldn’t know which ones to cross off…” Max quickly picks up on what she did wrong and looks down dejectedly. “Well if we find all the lounges and closets then we can cross everything off…. Right?” I come out and say. “….” Max gives me a disapproving look. “Hey I’m just trying to lighten the mood here. ‘Kay?” I throw up my hands as I say that. “Anyway the room-by-room search that Max suggested would work well. I mean that’s how me and April found you guys in the first place. Also, we’ll be able to identify some classrooms while searching, so the map isn’t all that useless.” I explain while taking on a serious expression. “Right.” Max nods while thinking over what I said. “I believe we should proceed as Jack suggested. What does everybody say to that? Does anybody want to suggest something else?” She inquires, giving the rest of the group a look each. “I agree too.” April raises her hand with a smile. “Yes, that might be the most efficient way of searching the school.” Anette joins in too and Chloe replies with an “Okay” and a nod. “Now that that’s out of the way, Anette…” Max calls out to the girl next to her. “…Yes?” Anette turns to her, confused. “I’m guessing you can’t tell which room will be which right?” She asks right away. “No I believe this is beyond my abilities… But I could find the location of one specific room if I were to set up a psychic beacon inside of it.” Anette answers and we all look at her in a way that I wouldn’t be surprised if question marks popped out of our heads. “A… what?” April asks with that same cringed-out smile she gave Max a few minutes ago. “Oh it’s something like a tracker of sorts. If I concentrate inside a room or place, and think of memories and incidents concerning that specific location, I could detect its whereabouts even after leaving.” Anette tries to explain to the best of her ability. “I don’t really get it but that’s extremely convenient.” I say folding my arms across my chest. “How so?” Max enquires. “Anette could set up that whatchamacallit tracker right here, so we’d be able to find our way back without having to search for it right?” I suggest once again and Max pats me in the back excitedly. “Nice thinking! I’m impressed!” She says practically smacking me. “Hey hey… you weren’t taking me for a complete idiot weren’t you?” I give her a hard stare. “That is quite possible.” Anette replies with her index finger pressed against her chin. The rest of us exchange looks and nod in unison.
As soon as the required preparations are made and Anette has set up her psychic beacon, we step out of the Home Ec classroom and find ourselves on the second floor of the school. “Damn this is confusing…” I mumble. “We’re on the second floor, right?” Chloe asks looking around. “It seems so. Let’s get moving!” Max states, holding out the map in her hands. With Max leading us and Anette by her side to stay alert for traps, our group marches onwards and begins its search. (What will we find?)
