Epilogue: Here's To The Future
When The Clock Strikes 3
As I slowly walk down the stairs and towards the exit of the school building I continue to ponder on where the hell April is at this time of the night. As I walk out the already opened door and step foot on the pitch black courtyard I bring out my phone and turn on the flashlight function. The street lights from outside the school illuminate the grounds slightly enough for anyone to make out the basic stuff but I’m still not taking any chances. The hairs on my arm prickle as a chilling night breeze blows throughout the courtyard. (Is that light?) I think to myself as I notice an illuminated small building just a few meters away from the school. (I’m guessing April woke up for the same reason as me…) I reach the most logical conclusion as I relax my tensed up body and walk towards the source of light. Instinctively, I walk past the girl’s restroom, which door is closed and I make my own way towards the men’s separate section. (I shouldn’t bother her.) I decide as I get inside to do my business. After a minute or so, I step out once again and notice that the lights are still on inside the girl’s  bathroom. As my gentlemanly nature takes over I decide to wait for her, outside of the bathroom so she wouldn’t have to walk back in the dark alone. I rest my back on the wall folding my arms, while I slip out my phone from my pocket and check the time “3:20 huh?” I silently mutter beneath my breath as I hear a voice come from inside the bathroom. (That’s definitely April’s voice.) As her voice gets somewhat louder I can now make out exactly what she’s saying. “Uughh!!” She lets out a frustrated groan, one that is surely not angelic, heck, not even ladylike. “I can’t believe I’m actually stuck inside this stupid school! I can’t keep up this damn goody-two-shoes act all the fricking time, it’s fucking exhausting! What shit luck!” April continues to rant in a way I would have never imagined. She’s supposed to be the school idol that’s always cheerful and kind. (I thought that something was off but damn… that’s a whole new transformation!) I think to myself as I stretch my ear so I can confirm that I’m not hallucinating. “I just want to go home and watch a movie or play games… Why did this have to happen to me of all people goddamit!” She goes on with her rant in the least female way possible. Diverting my attention away from April’s monologue, my eyes, having got slightly used to the dark, pick up a sudden motion directly across from me. Followed by a sudden rustling of a bush that catches me off guard, I jump up in a cry, probably loud enough for April to hear. Without wasting any time I hear her footsteps as she rushes to the door and swings it open making us come face-to-face in the process.  “What are you doing here?” She asks bluntly without shifting back into her persona. “Uhm… I… well…” I trip over my words as what I just heard still lingers inside my mind. “You heard all of it didn’t you?” April replies while glaring at me, as if I’d just been charged with the murder of her whole family tree. “No I…” The words catch on my  throat once again, before heaving a defeated sigh and throwing my hands up in mock surrender. “Yes, I did. For the most part actually.” I come right out and admit with a pleading look. “Tch” She clicks her tongue annoyed, in response to my answer and her menacing look becomes more fierce than ever before. “Look! We all have our circumstances we’d rather not talk about so let’s just leave it at that okay?” I quickly reply putting my hands in front of me as a form of defense. “You swear you won’t tell anyone about this?” The girl before me inquires, her gaze not budging an inch. “You mean about the fact that you act like an angel but deep down you’re a gorilla in disguise?” (I CAN’T BELIEVE I JUST LET THAT SLIP OUT!) I look back at her as I cover my mouth with my hands. But it’s too late. The bombshell has already been dropped. And I need to take some cover and fast! April’s face is slowly twisting in anger and I swear there’s a visible vein that just popped up on her forehead. “What did you just call me? Do you seriously wanna die? Right here?” She says with a sadistic smile as the vein on her forehead starts throbbing. “I’m sorry I swear that just slipped out! I won’t tell anyone about this! Not a soul, I promise! I don’t even have a reason to!” I almost shout out as I clasp my hands together in a form of a pleading bow. (I didn't know women could be so scary!) “I’m listening.” April replies as she folds her arms and looks at me sideways. “I mean we’ve got more important things to worry about why would I go around and start telling everyone about your personality? Well I'm not saying that if we weren’t trapped in here I would run around telling people but you get what I’m saying… right?” I try to logically talk my way out of the situation. “You have a point…” She says while sighing deeply. “You promise?” She asks me while looking inside my eyes, in a somewhat less threatening and more of a pleading kind of way. “Promise.” I say back returning her gaze. “Hold out your pinky then.” She says bluntly and I twist my face in confusion. “What?” I spell out. “Just… just do it already.” April spits back and I do as I’m instructed. She then locks her own pinky with mine and quickly says “Cross your heart and hope to die, stick a knife through your dick!” April shouts as my mouth falls open in surprise. “WAIT WHAT?!” I shout in response but she has already removed her finger from mine. “Done!” She says happily while bouncing on her toes away from me. All I can do is stand there mouth agape in shock.
“I can’t believe I agreed to this…” I mutter to myself as me and April walk back to the school together. “Well if you value your buddy’s wellbeing you’d better keep quiet about this.” She says with a fulfilled smile. (She’s 100% enjoying this…) “You’re evil…” I throw back while clenching my legs a little tighter. “Now that I think about it why where you standing outside the girl’s restroom?” She says bringing her index finger to her chin. “Are you perhaps… a pervert! A creep?!” She gasps covering her mouth as he walks inside the school. “No you idiot I’m not either! I just happened to have to use the bathroom too and I figured I’d wait for you since you wouldn’t want to walk back all by yourself!” I explain, trying to defend my dignity as a man, crossing the threshold of the door myself “Really? You sure you’re not one of those creepy dudes that are turned on by hearing uhm… you know what.” She asks albeit a bit hesitantly, as she walks up the stairs. “No of course not! I told you I’m not a creep!” I reply, following suit. “Also why did you suddenly shout out of nowhere?” April asks me once again while walking towards the Home Ec class. “I thought I heard something move next to the trees so I kinda jumped…” I scratch the back of my head awkwardly. (Talk about a lame excuse… man that’s embarrassing…) “You sure reek of manliness.” She bluntly states once again, mentally stabbing my ego with a knife. Having reached the Home Ec class, April puts her hand on the doorknob and before sliding it open taps into angel mode once again. She opens the door, but before she can take a step inside I grab her shoulder, stopping her. “Wait.” I instinctively voice. “This isn’t the Home Ec class.” I continue while gazing inside the classroom. The inside looks nothing like our home base, or even the Home Ec class before we changed its layout. (I’m sure we opened the right door though.) I think to myself as April closes the door and nods. “You’re… right.” She hesitantly accepts the fact that we made a mistake. (Or did we?) I look around the hall and count down the classrooms once again. “5th door to the right…” I mutter while scratching my chin. Out of curiosity I open the door next to the one April just did and to my surprise I find the chemistry lab. “Wait what? How?” I ask, but of course no one can find an answer to my question. “The chemistry lab is supposed to be on the 1st floor, what’s it doing here?” April looks as puzzled as I am. The gears in my head start turning furiously as I try to grasp what’s happening. “Did we accidentally stop on the first floor..? No that’s not possible, I remember going up the stairs more than once…” April says in a low voice, as she is too in deep thought. Suddenly the realization hits me and I walk down the hallway in order to prove my theory. “Wait where are you going?” She hurriedly trails behind me as I make my way to the first classroom on the right. “This has to be the arts classroom.” I say out loud as I swing the door open. And as I expected, it isn’t. “But it’s not. This is our class in fact.” I announce as I take a look at the crumbled floor. “We didn’t make a mistake, April.” I say as the pouring sound of rain starts once again. “The layout of the school just changed. The rooms’ positions are shifting.” Followed by that revelation, and as if on cue, a sudden flash of light fills the hallway and blinds us for a fraction of a second. April, not able to process the information, stands there looking at me, wide-eyed. “Shifting..?” She mutters after a couple of seconds. She takes a few moments to think about it and eventually nods “Yeah that sounds like the most plausible answer.” She finally agrees and straightens her posture. “So we just need to search for the Home Ec class, right?” She realizes as she checks back with me. “Yeah but we have no clue where it might me…” I start to think as I come into a halt in front of the staircase and the ear-splitting sound of thunder suddenly makes my ears buzz. We turn to look at each other as we both heave a reassured sigh. “I swear that just scared the living daylights out of me…” April mutters while bringing a hand over her chest. “Yeah me t-“ I try to reply but the heavy and loud sound of footsteps of someone slowly going down the stairs, interrupts my sentence midway. Me and April exchange frightened and confused looks as we simultaneously go down the stairs slowly after nodding at each other, so as to avoid coming into contact with whoever’s walking towards the floor we were just standing on. We stop midway and stare back to the hallway of the third floor, as I feel the girl next to me clench my arm. As the sound of the heavy footsteps approaches I clench my fist in nervous anticipation. Those footsteps don’t sound like they’re coming from any of our classmates, and just the thought of that makes my heart miss a beat. Almost instinctively I slide my phone out of my pocket for only a mere second and notice that the time is exactly 3:33. I hear April gasp and I return my gaze back to the no-longer-empty hallway.  Who, or more precisely what just descended that staircase though, is far beyond anything I could have imagined. There’s a tremendously big creature with grey skin long white hair and a creepy humpback with humongous arms slightly grazing the floor, standing right where we were only a few seconds ago. The creature sluggishly looks around the hall, making abnormal breathing noises. April’s breathing becomes heavier and so does mine as we look at possibly the most terrifying creature to have ever existed. It’s not long before it overhears us in this dead silence spreading throughout the hallway, interrupted only by our breathing, and turns around to look at us with red, menacing eyes and an ugly face twisted in anger. Suddenly my blood turns cold as the monster now starts inching towards us with a pained cry.
