Chapter 7 (Ava)
This morning seemed different. There were no birds chirping or sun shining, instead there was thick fog layering the ground. It looked like dry ice that engulfed everything below the treetops.
Jumping out of the tree I was sleeping in I felt a bit like Katniss Everdeen from the Hunger Games. Last night, I had an encounter with a wolf. Its gold eyes glaring at me, studying me like I was its prey, hence why I was up in the tree.
On the ground, it was the first time I noticed how cold it was. Me being overly cold, I was shivering and my teeth were chattering, the fog blocking out the sun didn't help either. Walking felt like ages, because of my clumsiness, but it was actually less than an hour.
What made my hike feel extra long was that I tripped on every little thing rocks, pebbles, sticks, and even air. Also, that every time I heard a sound, I would freak out. Probably PTSD from the wolf.
A small outline of a building was forming through the haze surrounding me. Feeling instantly energized, I took my chances running only tripping about a million times, but I finally made it to the brick building. I slowed, wanting to get a good look. It was somewhat tall.
The windows that I could see were either broken, or boarded up with wooden planks. The door looked old and had old police tape that read 'Police line do not cross' in big black letters against the yellow background. I ripped it off the door and stepped inside.
"Hello, is anyone here?"
Of course, no response. The only response I would get from here is one from the undead. A crack sounded from underneath my shoe. It was a piece of glass, and its friends scattered the ground near me. The floor was covered in huge white tiles that looked like they used to be pearly white, but now turned gray from old age. Long black tables lined the walls, with yellow withered papers covering their tops.
I curiously walked to the table to my left, seeing vials and beakers connected by a maze of plastic tubing. Getting closer to the back of the room, it seemed to be a lab of some sort. I noticed a small white container. Its lid was open, and contained about ten test tubes. Most were shattered with their corks nowhere in sight.
Picking one up, my arm knocked into something, causing the tube I was holding to connect with the ground.
I turned around wondering what I had hit and saw about ten more test tubes in a wooden rack. These had their corks on, with a rusty lamp that would have surrounded them in light, if the lightbulb wasn't so old.
It looked as if the scientists were in the middle of an experiment that got cut short. I was intrigued by them all, especially one that held a red hue and slightly glowed. It wasn't bright and all, but it looked so odd, so so odd. Bending down to get a closer look, I heard a rustle outside.
My attention was diverted to the noise, head whipping towards the sound, as body shyly crept to the door. I peeked around the broken door, and saw a bunny hop out of a nearby bush. My breathing slowed in relief. Turning back around, a hard surface collided with my stomach forcing me to the ground.
I groaned in frustration. "Seriously?"
Starting to push myself up, the old tile started to crack under my hand. The same thing happened underneath my other hand. The cracks spider webbed to all of the tiles my body fell on.
With no warning, tile after tile plummeted into the darkness below denigrating as soon as they came in contact with the dirt beneath. There was nothing holding my weight so unwillingly, I started free falling. Shutting my eyes tightly, my stomach seemed to collide
Surrounded by darkness my other senses compensated for the loss of sight; my nose went into to hyper drive. This place smelled sterile like how a doctor's office was. As my eyes started adjusting, I walked through the narrow hallway and was greeted by three open rooms. From what I could see they all looked identical.
Each had a hospital bed, and had cabinets lining one of the walls.
Carefully walking into the room in front of me, everything in it looked old and worn. There was paint peeling from the walls, and green, rotted, wooden floorboards were pried up.
It seemed like there were no more floorboards on the actual floor, let alone the ones without weeds and mold suffocating them. Every time I stepped, a loud creak sounded. Looking around, I found some old gauze pads and an entire population of dust bunnies.
Starting towards the bed, slowly, I felt odd, almost like I was supposed to be here. Like I was meant to be here. Like I was here before.
I heard a thump and swearing. "I'm here and ready to retrieve the missing link for our entire--"
The floorboard underneath me cracked. My ankle twisted sending me sprawling to the floor.
"Someone's here with me....Yeah, I think it is." The man stalked towards me. "I know you're in here....Ava."
