Cassandra
Nervousness is the sign that. something important is going to happen. Self Diary Page 13
Cassandra scribble those words with shaky hand. Her foots are constantly tapping in the marble white floor. She sit with her legs closed to eachother and her hands holding the self diary she made some days ago to write down important things. Her eyes scanning every inch of the corridor in which she sit with three other girls. They have nothing in common except for the fact that they all are compiting for the same job.
The girl beside Cassandra is a blond with hourglass figure and with hot pink lipstick. Crossing her legs she constantly scrolling down her phone and chewing gum. She's not getting the job Cassandra thinks.
Across her sits a woman looking at her 30s with glossy black hair and slightly narrow face. She just sits there with no nervousness and she's often checking her watch even though theres a gigantic white clock on the wall where the corridor ends, which reads 3:47 pm.
And the girl sits next to the woman is a brunette in her mid twenties, younger than Cassandra. She look utterly bored with life and this interview. Afterall they are sitting for long amount of time. The interview started at 12 pm and what seems like 50 candidates Cassandra's name still wasn't on the screen, which is right above the door where the interview is held.
"What?" The younger girl says. She realizes that she is staring and the girl seems to catch her eyes. "Nothing" Cassandra says with a small smile. The girl close her eyes and before that what seems to Cassandra she mouthed "weirdo". Cassandra lower her head and then she hear a ting sound and she looked at the name on the screen and it reads CASSANDRA MACMILLAN. She stand abruptly and shakes away the fatigue which she's feeling after a long waiting and walk towards the door feeling three eyes on her.
As soon she enters the room she sees a woman walking towards her. A candidate who entered few minutes ago for the interview. She seems low and quite angry. As soon she passes Cassandra she whisper "What a bitch" and Cassandra knew she was talking about the interviewer. The knot in Cassandra's heart tightens as she approach a black door with the name LYLA N. HARPER on it in a silvery font. A woman stand next to it motioned her to enter the room. She open the door and enters with a chant "Everything will be fine".
First thing she sees is the woman sitting in the chair of the interviewer. Her eyes on the papers laying in front of her. Her eyes are slightly widen as Cassandra sees her photo in the paper. "May I come in madam?" Her eyes sift through the paper to Cassandra's and their eyes lockes. A moment later the woman clears her throat and says " Yes, come in Cassandra" in a smooth almost enchanting voice. "Please take a seat Cassandra" she motioned to the chair across the table where she sit. Cassandra sits and sticks her hand for a handshake "Hello I'm Cassandra Macmillan" she takes the hand and shakes it gently then leaves it "Lyla Harper, so shall we start the interview ?" Lyla said with a smile and Cassandra couldn't help but smiles and gets comfortable in her seat "Of course"
It's a sale job so all questions were related to dressing and handling a customer. Cassandra had worked as a bartender when she arrived Manhattan particularly 2 years ago. so she knew how to handle customers. She then wanted to do small jobs that wouldn't be a headache for her as her neurologist suggested. But early this year she has started looking for jobs that she can take seriously and after dozens of interviews she stumbled across this particular job interview at HARPER STYLES. If she gets the job she didn't have to worry about her rent. She did research before coming to the interview.
HARPER STYLES is a multistory clothing boutique ran by the owner Lyla N. Harper. She's 29 as Cassandra and she's married. Her husband Zoe Harper is a public relationship and image consultant. She and her husband is ridiculously famous and wealthy. It's Cassandra's first time seeing Lyla Harper and she couldn't take her eyes off her. The woman sits across her is alluring and her confidence is like a reflect to Cassandra's eyes. Her voice is smooth and and comforting yet her tone is authoritative. She asks her questions and Cassandra answer everything with confidence. The nervousness she was feeling a moment ago in the corridor seems like vanishing in front of Lyla's comfortable voice.
Lyla nods her head and listen to her carefully. She's so different from the other interviewers Cassandra thinks. Others have shamelessly eaten in front of her while she was giving her answers and had commented on her outfit and someone just had stared at Cassandra's chest while she tried not to hit him in the face. Every interview she had walked with either hopelessness or with anger. She remembers the candidate before her saying "What a bitch" but Cassandra couldn't find one reason in Lyla to call her a Bitch. She is top to toe is what Cassandra call 'Perfect'.
The last question is "What is 'fashion' according to you Cassandra ?" Her name sounds so perfect in Lyla's mouth Cassandra thinks. She likes this question. In this question she needs to mix a part of her unlike those questions you can find in books like "What would you suggest a woman who is selecting clothings for a interview but isn't comfortable with her body shape".
Cassandra gives the question a thought then answers with a clear raspy voice "In my opinion Fashion helds different significant to different people. Some use it as confident booster tool, Some as a shield from the society, some uses as disguise some as their jobs" she motion a hand towards Lyla and she smiles "and some as a new starting" and Cassandra points towards herself.
"Very well Cassandra" after some seconds Lyla says. She seems pleased with her answer "So we will wrap it up" Lyla stands and almost like a mirror image Cassandra also stands and they shakes hands again. "It was nice meeting with you Cassandra. Thank You for your time." Lyla smiles and Cassandra almost blushes as she says "Me too, I hope I can see you again" as soon as Cassandra says those words she cringed at her own words. But Cassandra just nods.
Cassandra exists the room and smiles, some image came floating , she and Lyla sitting in a bar grabbing drinks and chatting, laughing. They both having a movie night sharing popcorns from same bucket. Then she shakes off those images. She's going to be your boss if you gets the job not your friend. But something about Lyla makes her so familiar to Cassandra that it's haunting but she pushes away those thoughts as she pass across the other three girls still sitting and after she steps away little more she hears Lyla's voice in distance "The Interview is closed, you'll can go home now" in a what seems like harsh tone. But Cassandra Sighs heavily and mutter under her breath "I'm so lucky".
After she reach the glass door of the building she spots the watchmen she says "Have a good day" and in reply he says "You too mam" they exchanges smile and she head towads the grey road and a man walks pass her with rough hair and bagged eyes, She presses her hand bag to her chest. After some blocks she finds a grocery store and tries to remember if she has milk in her refrigerator or not, she decides she will pick up some gallons and some bacon for the dinner, she sees some green peppers in a pantry and lifts one smelling and looking around but throws it in it place as the smell kicks and she fights the urge to puke. She never liked Green peppers. Then she pick some gallons of milk and bacon and pays with cash. She still keep forgetting her pin coad that's why she uses cash. As she reach for the stairs for the subway a wind blows her brown hair and then....then she felt a pair of eyes on her but refuses to look back as she dismounts the stairs as quick as possible.
