Cassie dragged an open chest containing many musical instruments and chords across the floor. The strident sound the friction produced bugged the ears of many and heightened the uneasiness with Kim.
A group numbering about fourteen stood in line with various musical instruments. It looked like what would happen when Simon Cowell and his gurus tasked themselves up with finding the next big voice in Britain. They were all anxious. The rest who weren't in the queue occupied themselves with chitty chats. Among them was Shane who seemed to be too busy with Fiona and Carmen that he didn't notice Kim. But she had already plucked his voice among the noise.
"Here," she said,"if authority sees us, this is our excuse."
"I don't know." Kim commented,"won't he or she find it flimsy?
"When we're asked what we're doing here, 'the music teacher asked us to move these stuff,' then we drag this over there." She explained. "And that is it."
"What if we're caught?" She scowled staring at her.
"Don't you start going all Moses on me. OK." She told her. "I know why I chose to do this with you. Why didn't I choose to do this with Emily, or even Mae instead. Come on, we're besties - just trust me. " Cassie wrapped an arm around her and squeezed. Kim felt a little relaxed.
It was a tuneful resonance that broke them. It came from the auditorium. They cropped up their heads behind the red drape. There they saw him.
Technical Skills was a course every first year student in Caster High had to offer. When Mr. Marque asked them to make a wooden sculpture of the Golden Bridge, a tin of worms had been opened. How was she going to do this? Compared to Tech Skills, Physics was way better.
Apparently from another class the man taught, he had a pet who was very good. She buried her pride and sought for help. And she was glad she did because he had an open house. He helped her till the last grain of wood was worked on. Boy was she relieved. An angel had been sent her way.(And a very beautiful angel he was.)
His name was 'Luka With The Very Good Long Hair'(that was what she called him) considering the long appreciable length of hair on his head, a General Science student. That was all she knew of him. She had never been able to see him since; he was limited and his scarcity had made her seem ungrateful. She had forgotten him in the shame, only to be reminded today. When the principal, on one Monday morning, called him forward to officially congratulate him for making the Arts Department of the school overflow with swirling pride in a Drama Fest in the entire region, his hair was coiled up under a hat that altered his total appearance since the hair was very particular. He wore a pair of shades too.
She didn't know the powerful voice she heard came with the many gifts, only to find out today. She gazed at him affected strongly in his favor. Oh my, she remarked.
"Do you have a thing for that guy?" An acquaint voice asked over their shoulders. They craned their heads to look. It was Shane.
"What?" Kim asked perplexed and said,"No."
"'Cause if you do," Shane said, " I think he's gay."
"What? Please." She said in response to the absurdity in the statement made. She was shocked.
"Luka's not gay," Cassie stated.
"Well then how do you explain the long straight hair and performances of songs by women - only."
"The ancient Chinese dynasty man kept his hair even longer. I just think that Luka's more of...a...traditional guy. " Kim tried to explain still looking at him.
He was Chinese but not one with the typical round face. His look was what one will describe as a latin American with the sexiness of a Mexican and the cuteness of a Chinese.
"I mean look at that face, how can that be gay?" Cassie bit her lips gazing at him.
Kim did not understand where the thought came from. She did know Luka and there was nothing, no, not a single ray of light said 'gay'. She was pissed by the allegation and wanted to keep Shane off.
"You know if it's not I'm lying, I'd probably say his chest is broader than yours." A tinge of humor reigned in the tone.
"Wait," Cassie whispered leaning into Kim, but not too low for Shane to be unaware ,"you've seen him naked too."
Kim told her best friend everything to the least detail. Cassie was always there to listen. She made the most embarrassing issues so funny that you would laugh yourself.
"Cassie!" She warned, "Shane."
"So what." She said turning to glance at him. The smirk up his face told them he overhead.
"And Shane if she was, would that make you jealous?" Cassie asked in keen expectation that he would reply in the affirmative. But he answered otherwise.
"The son of a b*tch irritates me - that's all."
"In what way?" Cassie queried.
"I mean he's...he's...just look at him." "What kinda straight guy goes into a competition including girls and comes out as the overall best female character. Isn't that enough proof?"
"Mhmm," Cassie agreed," that one is way suspicious." She shook her head.
"Exactly what I'm saying," he said and added," - come on he's a man."
"That's unreasonable," Kim stated,"being a man doesn't mean talentless. He's simply gifted. Until I see him chewing on the lips of another guy, I ain't believing it. If it's just the hair and choice of songs, then I totally disagree."
"Isn't that voice just...I don't know - he sings so passionately that it moves people. I for one am impressed."
"I've never seen you checking me out while I rehearsed before?"
"Actually this is my first time doing this. Cassie made me do this."
"Hey don't look at me," she said upon his stare," I pulled the horse to the river, I never forced it to drink."
He scowled.
"And just in case you're wandering, you're..." she thought for a split second, knowing how much compliments meant to him, she tried finding the most congenial one,"what's the word, ex.cep.tional." She broke it down for him.
"Oow thanks." He said.
Thunderous claps rose from some teachers numbering about three who sat before a panel, serving as judges - they judged from the way they jotted something down after the claps and said something to him with smiles beaming on their faces. Luka walked from the stage and darted towards them, happy for some unknown you. The next successive student, a girl with a gothic makeup who unto her white guitar.
"Hey Cassie," Terry called from behind. They all turned around to spot the tall figure hover over them. His hair was in a Bieber bob, tainted a dull brown. His piercing eyes were a blue pond that matched the blue shirt he wore. Cassie stepped forward and said,"What are you doing here?"
"Ditching class with you I guess." He stated.
"Are you stalking me again?" She asked kinda pissed.
"No," he replied,"I just want to talk. OK."
"I told you I needed some air so can you please let me be?"
"Cassie, I just want to talk for a second alone."
"What the hell about?" She asked.
"Alone please," he said firmly. He gestured her away as he followed her lead.
"Well that was...uh" Shane commented and pursed his lips. Kim agreed with a nod.
When she craned her head to see Luka, he was no longer around. She scanned the room for him but it was to no avail.
Where did he go? She wondered as her thoughts wandered in confusion.
"I'll see you later," she told Shane and set out to chase the unknown. "Yeah," he said as she went away,"catch you later."
She searched everywhere for him but he was no where to be found. She was hopeless after a long scour. Returning to class was impossible because once she did, all eyes would be on her, including Mr. Walker 's, and she didn't want any of that. She traced her footsteps back to the rear of the stage.
Reaching there, she met a melancholic Cassidy Jones. She ran into her and received her in a tight hug. Something had happened and it was very, very bad.
She sobbed.
