The phone
HE CONQUERS OTHERS IS STRONG BUT HE WHO CONQUERS HIMSELF MIGHTY
Hues of sunlight traveled her room and she flickered her eyes open as one landed on her. A yawn stretched through her body before she got up. She decided on a short shower that day as she didn't want to waste any more time. She figured that the early she attacked the task at hand, the faster she would have her answer rather than waiting it out till she could no longer bear the anxiety eating at her. She smiled at the reflection of her in a sky blue dress topped with a denim jacket and all-stars seekers. She put her hair up in a ponytail, applied some lip gloss that she borrowed from the girls then headed downstairs for breakfast with a sense of determination.
Words seemed to fail her as she searched for the right ones to say. She had never really done this before or asked for anything of this nature and had no idea what to expect. She watched as the water boiled before pouring it into her hot cocoa. With a plate of chocolate chip muffins, she made her way to her favorite sofa. She would never admit it out loud but she knew the only reason she preferred it over the others was that it was one seater so she never had to worry about making space for anyone when they'd visitors. She cleared her throat as her parents took a seat. "Mom, dad, uhh as you know by now I have new friends and things work differently around here than they do back home and what I want is to just fit in so I was wondering if I could get a new phone please?" Her voice remained small but audible.
Mike, her father had never been one for cutting corners so he looked her directly in her eyes and asked if there was a one she was inclined toward, his face remaining neutral. “Mmmh ….maybe a P30 well that’s what my friends have so, yeah,” she said fidgeting with the hem of her dress. “Okay sweet we'll have it home by tonight, " Ariel, her mother said kissing her on her head with a gentle smile as they walked out the door. A wave of relief washed over her the moment she heard the door shut.

She stared up at the clock, counting the seconds left till the end of the first period it was as if time was moving especially slower today just to taunt her. Even though every thought or reminder of Luka felt as if it only made the hands of time heavier, hindering their movement but somehow that made her think of him more. He had become a permanent resident of her brain but somehow the thought was somewhat comforting
math class seemed to drag along as the math teacher drones on about graphs while she made Wonderland her temporary home ".......Mukhetwa?" she distantly heard her name being called. She looked up to find everyone's attention on her, "the answer for [B]?" the teacher continued. "Oh..36," she uttered after assessing the equation on the board. At a very young age, she had managed to master the trick of daydreaming and paying attention.
The last bell of the day broke her for her trans but she wasn't relieved. She had managed to passively avoid Luka for the whole day and yet she wasn't quite sure how she felt about that. The school day was finally over, she made her way to her locker only to have her breath stolen. There he stood near the locker, watching her. Even though she knew there was no one around this, he had seen her, she still had the urge to turn around and bolt through the doors. She took a deep breath, slightly thrusting her chin forward. She walked toward him neither of them giving anything away to the other. She exchanged some books in her bag without a word being shared between them. She walk away in silence but his gaze remained on her, since that day he has gradually become overwhelmed by a sense of protectiveness over her. Trying to fight the desire to see her infectious smile once more. He followed soon after she walked out then they went their separate ways.
