Chapter 1- Broken Dreams
The day seemed to start out almost perfectly. Until it took a drastic turn, making it end in tears and heartbreak.
I and Alex were up in my room while my parents were downstairs chatting. We had just finished watching a movie.
"That’s gonna be us, Ellie," Alex told me when the credits started to scroll on the screen.
"Yeah, maybe one day," I said turning to face him. We had the same conversation every time we watched a film. It was our dream to act.
Alex stood up on my bed and began to improvise a song.
Gonna be movie stars,
Oh, yeah I can see it now,
Flashing lights,
A camera filming every scene,
I began to smile and joined him, standing up on my bed and dancing like an idiot. Then carried on with a new part to the verse.
Gonna be,
Gonna be movie stars,
Just a simple dream,
But everything it would change,
Adoring fans,
And passion,
In every take,
Alex ended it with,
Oh, yeah I can see it now,
Me and you movie stars.
We fell down on the bed laughing and struggling for breath. All the jumping and dancing had tired us out. After we caught our breath we decided to head downstairs to grab a drink, but we had only reached the top of the stairs when we heard the words that would change everything.
"We’re moving next week," we heard Alex’s mum say.
"But why do you have to move so far? Can’t he get a job closet to home?" My mum asked her.
"He’s set on it. I can’t change his mind. I’ve tried but there’s nothing I can do," she replied sadly.
"But what about Alex I’m sure he doesn’t want to move," my mum said.
"Believe me I don’t want him to leave but I’ve tried everything," his mum told her.
"He must be heartbroken," my mum pointed out.
"I haven’t even told him yet."
I didn’t see Alex make his way downstairs before it was too late. I couldn’t stop him. All I could do was follow him down the stairs. "We’re moving and you didn’t tell me, " he shouted as he stormed into the room.
"Darling I was going to tell you, " his mum told him and went to go hug him but he stepped backwards, away from her.
"When? When it was time to move so I didn’t have a choice, so I would just move with you? Don’t I get to choose what I want?" He was still shouting but now tears begun flowing from his eyes.
"I’ve tried talking to your dad but he’s still going," she replied refusing to answer his questions.
"Why can’t we just stay here and let him go if he wants to so badly? " He asked but she didn’t say anything. "Oh, so it’s all for him. Doesn’t matter how I feel?"
"He’s your dad, " she pointed out.
"Yeah, and I’m your son or doesn’t that matter?" He wondered.
"Of course it does, " she said lowering her voice, looking at her son intently and lovingly.
"Then let us stay, " he begged.
"I’m sorry we can’t, " she told him.
"I hate you and I’m not going anywhere with you. You can’t make me, " he screamed and ran out of the room into the garden. He didn’t mean what he said about hating her, I knew that because he loved his mum. He was just angry and upset at the moment. I followed him and found him sitting on the bench so I joined him. He was still crying when I sat beside him.
He looked up and turned to me, the whites of his Grey-blue eyes looked red from all the crying. "I don’t want to move," he sobbed, which just set me off crying too because he was my friend and I hated seeing him sad. Plus I was upset he was leaving too.
"I don’t want you to either but you have to," I pointed out, tears seeping from my eyes.
"No I don’t, " he argued.
"You do and we both know it," I said firmly.
"But you’re my best friend."
"I know, you are mine too but we will keep in touch, won’t we? Nothing will stop us being friends. What have we always said?" I asked him, trying my best to cheer him up.
"We’ll be best friends forever," he replied.
"Yes and nothing will change that. No matter how far away you move," I said. He didn’t reply instead he pulled me into a hug and held me tightly. I hugged him back and our crying gradually came to a stop. We then knew it was true, our friendship was stronger than anything. Strong enough to last the distance.
We stayed hugging until our mums came out to collect us and we promised to make our last days together before he left the best we ever had and that we would talk on the phone every day. That was a promise we kept, but everything was going to change from then on.
