'Hi, Racy. Why are you still wearing your coat? It`s like 10 minutes before the first lesson.'
'Lily, I was waiting for you.' Said Grace in a way like she was going to cry.
'Has something happened?'
'I`ve messed up again and director said that I cannot be forgiven this time.'
'What have you done?'
'I`ve been standing with a few friends of mine when a teacher came. I didn`t know that she is a teacher, so I`ve told her that it`s not her business what I am doing here.' Said Racy with too sad eyes. 'I just wanted to say goodbye'
'No, you won`t do it. Not now!' Screamed Lily and ran straight to headmaster`s office.
An interesting fact about their school was that it was quite small just around 300 students that is a small amount compared to other schools. Everyone in the city knows so many rumours about that school that almost no one has an intention to connect their beloved child and this huge mistake of the city. Tom Gilbert has never believed in any of them. He had studied there once so he knew the truth.
'Mrs Kemp, with all of my respect to you, Grace Barker cannot be expelled from this school.' Politely argued Lily. 'I know, she made some mistakes in the past, but she isn`t guilty. This is what most of your students go through. It is called pressure.'
'Mrs Gilbert, please, calm down. I know what the pressure is. I don`t need a lecture. I understand that she is a close friend of yours...'
'The only true friend of mine!' Interrupted Lily.
'I know you ang your tough story, but she is just a spoiled baby who needs a hard life-lesson.'
'She is just a teen. She is supposed to make mistakes and to be forbidden.'
'She has to take lessons from her actions and I cannot keep an addict in my school. It has a horrible reputation and I don`t want to make it even worse.'
'What kind of school will give her a chance after an exclusion from our school with its reputation?' Rudely asked Lily. 'She will never have a chance to become an ordinary human or to get a high education! She will become a drug-seller and it`s all because of you!'
'Mrs Gilbert, if you won`t calm down and stop raising your tone, you will never succeed in making people to do what's best for you. However, I have heard you, hope you are right. Otherwise, it will be your fault. Be ready to your deepest disappointment.'
'You don`t know her.' Said Lily and left the office.
That was a hard thing for her to argue with a person. She almost never does it. Only if it comes to Jace and John who had to be taught by her, and she had no other options how to make little children listen to her. Her body was shaking, she was feeling like she was losing her breath. She wasn`t, actually. But a huge pain in her chest was raising after each breath.
'You will be okay.' Painfully said Lily.
'What had happened to you? You look awful. Are you sick?' Worried Grace.
'You will be okay.' Every word made so much pain that she could hardly continue the dialogue.
'I need an explanation to these words.' Demanded Grace.
'You are not expelled. Not any more.'
'That`s great. But right now I will take you hope. You really look sick.'
A way home was another challenge to Lily. Even her legs was shaking. It made her walk too slow and painful. After coming home the only thing she could do was to lie on her bed and wait for another bad thing happen to her. She was holding her necklace, crying and praying for all her pain to end.
Unfortunately, as an adult she had her responsibilities such as work. It was 4.30 p.m. and she had to get on the bus which goes to the city centre, but she was stopped right in front of the main door by Mrs Gilbert.
'Good evening, goody. Where are you going?' mumbled Alice.
'I am heading to the "Lips". It`s my workplace.' Lily explained it because Mrs Gilbert was too drunk even to remember who is Lily.
* Nancy started barking at Lily*
'You see, even dog understands, that you have too much freedom in here. Why the house is so dirty? Isn`t that your work? You are living here for free and you don`t do anything. I`ll talk to my husband about giving you back.' Warned Alice.
'Mrs Gilbert, I was feeling a bit of today, so I couldn`t clean the mess. I am sorry. I will definitely do it after the work.' Excused Lily and tried to get out of the building when she stopped her again.
'I said you must clean it right now! An orphan must do everything to stay in home! I can make you live on the street and no one will give a ... about you and your life!'
Nancy became to aggressive when suddenly she ran to Lily, and she bit her. Mrs Gilbert was just standing and laughing, she did nothing to help. Nancy continued biting her for about a few minutes when Lily saw a vase not far from her hand. She took it and throw it into Nancy. After that, Lily was full of bites left home and tried to escape. She knew that there is only one hospital nearby, but she almost lost consciousness on her way there.
'Help me!' Shouted Lily and felt on the floor. She was finally in safety.
Her blood was spreading from all bites. Her eyes were slowly close down. The last thing she saw was Mr Gilbert running to her.
'Lily! Lily! Wake up! Please. I will kill Nancy. I will definitely kill her.' Said almost crying Mr Gilbert, when Lily interrupted him.
'That wasn’t Nancy. It was a dog from the street.' Lied Lily.
'You don’t need to lie. Jace saw what have happened. He was afraid of the dog. And John was in the school. And Alice... Lily, you know, that my wife is alcoholic. She couldn’t help.' Explained Mr Gilbert.
'You were crying. How many hours I was unresponsive?'
'One day. You lost a lot of blood on your way here. Thanks, God, you survived. I hadn’t forgiven myself, if something bad would happen to you. Now, just rest. You need some powers.'
'I am okay.' Said Lily and fell asleep almost in a few seconds. She was hardly feeling her body. That made every move like the last one. The only thing that was moving perfectly was her head.
'Do you want to have visitors?' Asked Mr Gilbert.
'Maybe.' Answered Lily.
Mr Gilbert opened the door and Grace ran into ward. She looked so upset and killed like she almost cried after seeing Lily.
'You…' Trembled Grace. 'You are alive'
'As you see, I am.' Joked Lily.
'I was crying for a whole day. I even thought that you are going to die.' Sobbed Grace.
'I still have to take care of you.' Cheered Lily.
'You have one more visitor.' Added Grace. 'I`ll go and bring you some tea.'
'Hi, Lily. I`ve been waiting till you two will finish.' Said Vincent. 'I am here only because of Mrs Kent who was worried about you. I have given her our project and told what happened to you. And she made me come here.'
'You could lie that worried about me. What mark did we have?' Asked Lily.
'A+ but I would be more interested in seeing you fainted.'
'Why would I do that?'
'That is what happens when geeks like you get a low mark, isn`t it?'
'I don`t think I am a geek.'
'Has anyone ask you that? That is not how reputation works. Here is an equation. You have good marks plus you work at a café plus you act like a teacher's pet equals you are a geek.'
'That is weird. It`s almost 2 minutes since you came and you are still here talking to me. Wouldn`t it make your reputation worse?'
'That knows only Grace who isn`t that bad to tell something to the "readers".'
'You cannot be sure.'
