Chapter 14
Soon enough, Arthur held up something that grabbed the king’s attention. Oberon dropped his utensils as he was shocked and speechless. A single word was not uttered after that.
Oberon looked down at the table and sighed deeply.
Arthur and Maximillian glanced at eachother as Arthur held up a black obsidian bracelet. Arthur was determined that he would not leave without gaining any information about the jewels and his mother.
"I have to leave." Oberon stood up and walked towards the large doors.
"Know that we will not be leaving this palace until we get details regarding mother and the jewels."
Oberon suddenly stopped but didn't look back. Arthur didn't look at his father either, and didn't lower the bracelet he was holding. Maximillian looked back at his father, hoping he would come back and spill the truth already.
"Might as well come back and mention all about the information that we are seeking." Arthur continued.
"I... cannot." Oberon said in a small voice. Arthur stood up and faced his father as he lowered his arm.
"And why is that?" Arthur asked in a stern voice.
"You've been coming here for the past 5 years hoping to gather a bit of information regarding this matter. You will turn back to your kingdoms in the same way-"
Oberon was cut off by Arthur.
"I have made an oath to myself that I will not leave until or unless I get that information that you hide, father! I am not going to leave this palace until I get what I want!" Arthur said in a firm voice.
His eyes showed determination and stubbornness. Oberon knew very well that Arthur was right in every word he said.
"Father." Maximillian spoke and Oberon looked up at him with sadness in his eyes.
"I know how you feel, I really do. There was a time that I thought my life has completely ended after mother's death. But father, hiding this secret will not ease your pain. Please give us the opportunity to avenge mother once and for all. Let her be happy and let us be satisfied. She was our mother, and whatever happened to her is a part of our business. And we have the right to know." There was a long pause as Maximillian gave Oberon the time to think things through.
"Would you tell us father? Please? For our sake, for our kingdom's sake and..... for mother's sake?" Maximillian continued in a soothing voice.
Oberon switched glances between Maximillian and Arthur, then he nodded slowly.
Maximillian walked towards his father and lead him back to his seat.
Mentally, Arthur was glad that Maximillian came with him. But there was no way he would admit that out loud.
Maximillian and Arthur sat back on their own seats and gave a sigh of relief that they had succeeded in convincing their father.
"As you both know, the jewels are of your mother's. The things that we only have left of her....are those jewels." Oberon took a deep breath without making eye contact with his sons.
"Yes, but where is the other one. According to the information we have gathered so far, there is supposed to be one more-" Arthur was cut off by Oberon.
"A ring." Oberon said sternly.
"I'm sorry....what?" Maximillian asked, confused.
"A black obsidian ring. That is what's missing." Oberon said.
"So...where is it?" Arthur said after a long pause of silence.
Oberon took another breath.
"The bracelet..." Oberon pointed towards the bracelet Arthur was holding a while ago.
"And the ring. These two weren't just ordinary jewels. They were filled with forbidden magic. And eventually, word spreaded. That your mother wielded magic that was forbidden and that she was a 'witch'!" Oberon scoffed and looked away. He emphasized the word, 'witch'.
"But who would go around with a rumour such as that?" Arthur pointed out.
"Unfortunately, we weren't the only ones who knew about the forbidden jewels. Thaddeus, did too." Oberon's face was filled with anguish and rage.
"Thaddeus?" Maximillian asked.
"Your mother's brother." Oberon finally looked up at the two brothers, who were struck by absolute shock.
"Your telling us, that our mother's brother, and our uncle was the one who spreaded the rumour that our mother possessed forbidden jewels? But why would he do such a thing?!" Arthur's voice was filled with rage and anger was visible in his eyes.
"I didn't even know we had an uncle..." Maximillian looked down and developed his interest to the floor.
"We never did mention his name after that incident. And why he pulled up a false rumour, you ask?" He looked up at Arthur. Arthur didn't respond, but looked up at him seriously.
"That man was taken by greed. He wanted the jewels all to himself. Thaddeus set up a plan that involved your mother being executed. Alas, that plan worked. People demanded execution for her and she died. While, Thaddeus took the ring to himself." Oberon furrowed his eyebrows in anger and confusion.
"Why didn't you do anything to save her?" Maximillian asked with sorrow in his voice.
"I had no power. I couldn't do anything to stop it. I tried. I did all I could but it still wasn't enough." Oberon clenched his fists.
"He has the ring, but the bracelet is with us. He couldn't activate the full power unless he has both jewels. But the ring that he wears gives him enough power as it is. Make sure he doesn't get the bracelet."
Arthur stood up and went to the door as he started to leave.
Maximillian stood up as well.
"Arthur!" Oberon's voice stopped him from moving any further.
"I have a feeling that there is a war coming our way, with the man who still has your mother's blood on his hands." Oberon said as he stood up. Arthur didn't face him.
"Then I will make sure to wipe the blood off of his hands. There is no place for traitors like him to roam free in our world. He will pay." Arthur said sternly, with a growl at the end. He clenched at the bracelet he was holding, and walked away with Maximillian following behind.
