The Funeral
She rushed into my arms, her body shaking. I feel my body stiffen.
I've never let anyone hug me before...
My arms fight me, my muscles moaning like they need oil.
I place a hand on her curls, patting and combing, my other arm hugging her waist, rubbing in slow circles. I sway side to side, softly, as she sobs.
Once she's done she fused over my tear-stained shirt. She got Ms. Sanders to let me borrow one of her step dad's. It just reminds me of how much I didn't know about her.
I shrugged the feeling away, relief washing over me in crashing waves. Don't cry, don't cry!
We managed to come down the stairs together. I didn't ask who's funeral it was, I just let her cling to my side. Inside I hoped she couldn't tell I didn't want her to ever let go.
Turns out it was an uncle, one that was very close to Tessa. She steeled herself as if trying not to shed more tears.
My muscles creaked as I opened my arms again. She sunk into them gratefully, sighing as she laid her head against my shoulder.
I layed my head on top of hers, smiling to myself.
After she paid her respects, she led me back to Ms. Sanders's car. Our hands swung between us.
Her mother dropped me off at my house, Tessa kissing me on the cheek as I got out.
I waved goodbye, a hand hanging stupidly on my face where her lips had touched me. I was still there long after she was gone, waving as the chilly wind froze me in place.
