Tutor
I went back to school the next day, the sun shining and the birds singing. Or it was until Miss. Fish, our Algebra teacher, kept me after class.
She said, in her high voice, "Thomas, I'm worried about your grades."
I replied, "I just don't get any of it. It makes no sense to me."
Miss. Fish puts her hand on her chin, humming to herself. Then her beady eyes light up. She laughs, "You need a tutor! I know just the person! Go on your way, I'll tell you about it more tomorrow."
I nod, excepting the pass to my next class.
The next day Miss. Fish told me to stay after class again. She was practically jumping, face smiling and bright red. She says, "Your tutor is Tessa Weaver!"
My jaw drops to the ground. I nod, pretty sure there's drool running out of my dumb mouth. Miss. Fish confirms it with a sigh and pointed at my face.
Surprise still lingered in my mind, sticking like glue to my pounding heart.
Miss. Fish claps her hands together, "You can meet her in the library during this period. Don't disappoint me."
I nod once more, zombie-like, walking out of the classroom on autopilot. Once out of the room, heat rushes up into my cheeks. I smile, pulling my backpack strap closer to my shoulder.
Once I was at my next class's door I realized I had forgotten my pass.
