Chapter 25
I slipped on my slippers and made my way down the stairs of the mansion. The dark rooms of the mansion told me that it was still very early in the morning and no one was up yet. I had to switch on lights as I entered each room and hallway because there wasn't enough light for me to see where I was going. If I didn't do so I would trip and fall. I took the time to look around the mansion because I still didn't know my way around it. Inside one of the rooms, there was a giant flat screen TV. There was also sofas and chairs. The TV was about 52 inches. There had been a TV all along. I entered and saw Nick watching something on the TV so I walked over. Did he really walk through the mansion and down the stairs in the dark? I thought before realising that he was a vampire. It was just easy to forget what he was because he wasn't anything like the vampires that I've seen in movies or read about in books.
"Hey," I said and sat down next to him.
He turned to me, and said "Good morrow, Vick." Did he think he was in a Shakespeare play now?
"You do realise this is the twenty-first century and no one speaks that way anymore right?"
"You're wrong because I do," he replied.
"Yeah, I kinda figured that out," I said and we both started to laugh.
"How long have you been up?" I asked him when I had finished laughing.
"Not long," he answered.
"What time is it anyway?" I wondered.
"Half five," he replied. Half five? I had never been up so early before, but yet I didn't feel tired at all.
"Do you want to go for a walk?" He asked me.
"Yeah, why not?"
We left the mansion, and I was walking around outside with my slippers on. Maybe it wasn't the best idea since it was dark, and I was clumsy. I couldn't see very well, but at least the sun was going to start rising soon. " Can you see?" I asked Nick.
"Yes, I can. I'm a vampire remember. Don't worry I won't go far ahead," he said.
"Thank you," I said gratefully but I could barely see him. This made me scared. Although, I could hear the leaves making crunching noises under our feet. I knew Nick was walking next to me. "I'm scared," I claimed.
"I'm right next to you, I won't let anything happen to you," Nick told me. The way he spoke the words seemed to calm me a little. Maybe, it was the way he talked so softly and with love, and kindness.
"I know it is stupid and you probably wouldn't want to, but could you hold my hand? I just want to know where you are so I feel safer." I said. "Wait no it doesn't matter. Forget I said that."
"I will hold your hand if it will make you feel safer," Nick said and I felt a hand take a hold of my right. Suddenly I felt much safer but of course, I was still a little scared. This was one of the reasons I liked him, I felt safer and happier around him.
The sun slowly began to rise as we walked, and after a while, I noticed Nick had stopped. I stopped myself and looked to him. Luckily it was brighter now, and I could see him more clearly but not very much.
"What's wrong?" I asked him.
"Nothing. I just want to talk to you," he replied.
"Okay, what is it?" I wondered looking into his eyes. Why was it that I always found my self-looking into them? He looked back into mine just like the first time we met, and this time I felt like I would no longer be able to turn away from them. I was too enthralled by their brightness, and the way they stood out against his pale skin. His eyes were beautiful, there was no other way to describe them, and he was so handsome. I wanted to be with him, and I know I had thought about it before, but now I was sure I wanted to kiss him. I wanted to hold him, and I wanted to be his, but I thought that would never happen.
"Do you know yesterday when I said I liked you, and that you were my best friend? Well, I do really like you a lot. More than a best friend, and I was wondering if you wanted to go out with me?" I wasn't sure if I was hearing him correctly. He was asking me out. This was what I wanted him to ask yesterday. I was lost for words but I wanted to say yes.
"Say something please?" he asked a little worried.
"Of course, yes," I answered, and he smiled. He moved his head close to me and tilted it slightly closing his eyes. I closed my eyes also and, let him kiss me. I felt his arms around my back. I put my arms around him holding him tightly and fell into his embrace. I thought I would be nervous when I had my first kiss but I wasn't because it felt right. I wanted him to kiss me, and I wanted to kiss him back. He let go of me and stopped kissing me. No, I didn't want it to end. I could stay in his arms for ever; they made me feel safe.
"Do you want to walk back to the mansion, and get some breakfast?" He asked me.
"Yes," I answered and he held out his hand to me. I put my hand in his and we started walking.
Two people walked out in front of us, and we stopped dead in our tracks.
The woman I recognised. It was the woman from the concert. The man I had never seen before, and he had dark blond hair. His eyes were a strange mix of colours; they were orange and brown. She had told me that I would find out who they were back at the concert, and maybe this was the time. Although, I had a feeling that told me I knew exactly who they were, and I was scared but I couldn't be. I just hoped that I was wrong. I just couldn't let them know I was scared. I wouldn't give them that advantage so I had to be brave, and I couldn't let my fear get the better of me. The unsettling feeling of fear built up inside me; I could feel the butterflies in my stomach, the bad kind and my hands started to shake slightly. Hopefully not enough for them to notice.
Sooner or later we would have to fight them. Later sounded good but I still had to be prepared. Which I wasn't, they were stronger, wiser and I knew this could be our end. I looked towards Nick and noticed that he was also frightened.
"If they are who I think they are, we can't let our fear get the better of us, and we can't let them know we are scared or we will lose," I said telepathically to him.
"You're right. We must be brave," he agreed.
"Who are you?" Nick asked them.
"I'm glad you asked," the woman said.
"We are your worst nightmare," the man added. I had been right.
"You're going to kill us." I didn't even need to ask because it was obvious to why they were here so I just stated it as fact.
"Yes," the woman said as she walked closer to me. Her sharp, pointy teeth were now clearly visible. I wanted to run but I knew I couldn't. I wouldn't let them see me scared because they would think that I was weak so I just stood there looking her in the eyes. I had to stand my ground, and I was ready. The fear wouldn't get to me this time, and I refused to get bitten again.
The temperature to my right-hand side suddenly increased. I wanted to know what it was that caused the sudden rise in temperature, but I didn't take my eyes from the woman vampire in front of me. I was scared, but I wasn't stupid. I knew that you shouldn't turn your back on your enemy because they would attack. You had to be aware of what they were up to at all times so that you could be ready.
The man laughed and then spoke. "So scary. I can do that too but I know how to use it," he said, and the woman stepped back away from me to look at him. I took this as my opportunity to see what was happening.
I looked at the man to see that fire completely surrounded his whole body. Wait, he said that he could do it too so that meant, Nick had fire around him too. I quickly turned to face Nick and saw flames around him. It wasn't even possible. The fire burnt but yet I was seeing fire around them both, and they were completely unharmed. When I turned back around a fire ball flew towards my face so I put my hands up, and screamed. What would my hands do? Nothing that's what. I would still get burnt. There was a loud, deep scream, and I dared to put my hands down. I saw that the man was laying on the floor just a few feet away from us. He was soaking wet, and the flames were gone. Did I just do that? I must have done. Why else would my hand feel soaking wet? I thought but I couldn't finish it because I found myself flying through the air, and I landed hard onto a patch of grass.
All my body ached from the impact, and I was sure that my bones were broken. I moved my head and looked to the side but the pain shot through my body so I just moved it slightly, and then sighed. There was a tree just a few inches away from me.
"This isn't over. You're lucky that we need to be somewhere," I heard the woman vampire say.
"Don't worry I know it isn't over, you will pay for hurting, Vicky," Nick shouted angrily. I had never heard him so angry before, and he sounded frightening.
"Goodbye," the man said, and then I heard foot steps running towards me.
"Vicky are you okay?" Nick asked as he kneeled down beside me. I tried to look at him but I hurt too much. I couldn't bear it so I started crying.
"It hurts," I could barely say.
"Can you get up?"
"I don't know," I answered.
"Try," he said as he helped me to sit up.
Once I was sat up he hugged me and kissed me gently on the top of my head. I wanted to pull away because of the pain but I couldn't He took a hold of my hand while his over arm remained around my back, hugging me. Nick lifted my arm, and then I saw that it was bleeding. So did he because he was staring at it with hunger. It scared me, but I knew he wouldn't hurt me. I don't even know why I knew that because he was a vampire, and vampires craved blood. It was stupid, I know, but I knew he wasn't evil, not like other vampires or maybe I was just as stupid as them girls in books who fall for blood sucking monsters.
"Nick, stop, please. If you're thirsty we can get you some blood from the castle," I said, and he dropped my arm.
"I wasn't going to hurt you. I'm hungry but not that hungry. I'm sorry I scared you. What if I hurt you one day? Maybe we shouldn't be together," he said sadly.
"Don't say that," I said.
"What if I do actually hurt you one day? When vampires become adults they need more blood to survive. There's something else too that you don't know. Fresh blood is more appetising and filling than blood out of pouches. That's why some vampires drink from people but when they do some become to crave it more after one taste. Not all, a small majority and I'm scared, in case that will happen to me."
"Have you ever drunk blood from a person?" I asked him.
"No," he replied.
"Then there's no need to worry. Besides, you said it was a small majority," I stated.
"I did," he said.
"Then don't worry," I told him. "Can I rest now?"
"No, we need to get you to the hospital and we don't know how injured you are yet," he said as he picked me up in his arms, and I gasped in pain. My body really was broken. I had never felt pain like it before, but I didn't want to go to the hospital because I was scared to find out how bad my injuries really were. I grabbed hold of him in fear from being off the ground, not because I didn't trust him. It was because I wasn't use to being picked up.
He started walking in the direction of the mansion I wondered if the hospital was this way too. Then he turned to walk to what was my right. Where was the hospital anyway? It properly was in the middle of nowhere like the school. "Are you sure this is the way to the hospital?" I asked him.
"Yes, it's a short cut," he answered.
A while later I realised that we were no longer in the woods, and I noticed a large building a little further off in the distance. Nick carried me towards it. There was ambulances parked outside, the old, creepy looking hospital building. It had an eerie feeling about it, and I bet it was haunted by the many people who had passed away in there. I hoped I didn't have to stay there long.
Inside was no better. In fact, the creepy feeling was worse. I saw that there was a few people sat in the waiting room. It felt empty unlike the city hospitals that were always packed, and it always took hours for them to check up on you. Suddenly my eyes started to go blurry from the tiredness, and drowsiness that had started to come over me. My eyes were forcing themselves shut so I struggled to keep them open. Nick was right though it was probably best to stay awake.
"Hi, we need a doctor. She was in an accident," Nick said urgently to someone behind the desk.
"Okay, calm down. What's her name?" I heard a woman ask.
"How can I calm down? She's hurt," Nick shouted.
"Alright don't calm down but what's her name?"
"Vicky," I said.
"What?" The woman asked.
"Her name is Vicktoria Wilson and she is sixteen," Nick answered.
"Alright thank you, I will call for a doctor."
Not long after I heard a man call out my name. It was time to find out how bad my injuries were. Nick walked over to the doctor and placed me down gently on to one of them beds with wheels.
"What happened?" The doctor asked. I didn't know how we could tell him. He might not know about supernaturals.
"She got attacked, and fell," Nick answered.
"How did you find her?" He asked quizzically. He didn't believe us.
"I was on my way to meet her," Nick said but the doctor still didn't believe him.
"Who are you? Are you related?" he asked.
"I'm her boyfriend."
"Alright. Well, she will need an X-ray," the doctor said.
I was worried that they were going to find something serious. You'll be fine, Vicky, I had to keep telling myself, but I was still scared. Although if something really was I didn't think that I would have been awake. All so, of course, I was a little scared. You always think the worst when at the hospital or doctors.
The doctor pushed the bed towards the X-ray room as Nick walked along side. It wasn't far. We had only gotten to the end of the corridor when we stopped.
"Nick don't leave," I said.
"I'm not going anywhere. I won't leave you," he told me, and then I was pushed into the room to be X-rayed.
"Hey," I said and sat down next to him.
He turned to me, and said "Good morrow, Vick." Did he think he was in a Shakespeare play now?
