Chapter 3
This is it, the first day at my new school. What’s wrong with me? I thought. I never knew I would ever be excited about school. It was still early so I decided to get a shower.
It didn’t take me that long and when I got out I put on my new school clothes: a black skirt, black tights and a white blouse. I didn’t have my school blazer yet. The head teacher had told my mum that I could pick it up on my first day. Once I got ready I went downstairs.
My mum didn’t seem to be up yet. "Mum, are you getting up?" I shouted up the stairs. She would be late for her new job if she didn’t get up.
"Yeah, honey, I’m getting up now," She replied, and then I went to the kitchen to see what my mum had gotten at the shops so I could have breakfast. I found some English muffins and some fruit. Preparing the English muffin I cut it in half and put it in the toaster on a low setting.
Strange, I didn’t remember bringing it in, maybe my mum brought it in when I was busy doing something. The toaster popped up so I got a plate and buttered it. Before returning to the living room to sit at the table to eat, I picked up an apple. My mum came down the stairs just as I sat down. "Morning mum.
"Good morning. You were up early this morning."
"Yeah," I said and then smiled before taking a bite out of the muffin.
"It’s good to see you so happy. Are you feeling more happy about living here now?" She asked.
"Yeah, this town is really beautiful and some of the people are really friendly."
"That’s good. Just give it a chance. It might become a better place for you to grow up in, you might get more friends," she said and went to the kitchen, to return with an English muffin her self.
After I finished breakfast I got ready to set off, but first I had a quick drink of orange juice. After that I picked up my bag, making sure I had my purse and phone. Not that I would be able to get a signal here, but you never know my phone network might decide to be kind to me and provide a signal in a few places.
"Are you going to work yet?"
"Not yet. I don’t need to set off yet. You want me to walk you to the bus stop?" You had to catch a bus to the school and university because they were situated in the middle of nowhere and was a good few hours walk from the village. It was also the only bus that ran through and the only bus that was of service near the village.
"Okay."
"Alright are we setting off?" she wondered.
"Yeah," I said and then we left.
When we reached the bus stop there were only two other people there. They were both girls and they wore school uniform. One was very short, and she had blonde dyed hair. You could see her darker roots underneath. The other girl was the same height as me, and her hair was light brown. I didn’t know if it was her natural hair or dyed, but it was lighter than mine.
They smiled as I stopped next to the stop. I smiled back, awkwardly.
A few minutes later the bus arrived and the girls went on. I lifted my bag higher on my shoulder. This is it my official first day. Time to make a new start, time to actually make friends this time, if that’s even possible.
"See you later, Vicky. Have a good day," my mum said as she hugged me.
"Bye mum," I said and when she let go I found my way onto the bus. I paid driver my fare and walked down the bus and sighed preparing myself to talk.
There was a spare seat next to a girl with short bright red hair. I approached the seat, carefully. "Erm...Excuse me if anyone sitting here?" I asked her, nervously.
I was never good with introductions or talking to people in general, that’s why I only had one friend. It’s not like I didn’t want friends it was just that I wasn’t good around people. I would rather keep quiet and to myself in a crowd, rather than be loud. Most of the time I just put my headphones in to avoid confrontation.
I wanted to talk to people, but I was too anxious to do so. Knowing me I would end up saying something stupid in the end anyway. I guess this was why I got bullied at my old school, but maybe there would be different. Emilee had been patient with me and never judged me. Then finally somehow I got comfortable talking to her and we then grew closer, and maybe that would happen again. Who knew?
"No, you can sit here," she replied.
"Thank you." I sat down and took out my phone so I could listen to music.
"You’re the new girl right. Vicktoria is it?" She asked before I could choose a song.
"Yeah, but I prefer to be called Vicky." I hated being called Victoria. To be honest I wasn’t sure why. I liked the name but hated it being said aloud.
"Well Vicky, I’m Kaitee. I’m in your year and I don’t mind showing you around the school if you want."
"Yes, thank you," I mumbled not wanting to speak further in case I said anything stupid, and I really wanted to listen to my music. However, she smiled when I told her that.
"I hope you like nature because that is all we really have here," she said, obviously not getting the hint I clearly wasn’t comfortable talking to a stranger.
"You have some really incredible buildings here," I muttered.
If she insisted on talking I better talk to her, even if I didn’t want to. I didn’t want to come off as rude or unsociable because I promised my mum I would try to make friends, and I wanted to make some too.
"Really?"She asked and she looked very confused.
"Yeah, they have so much history in them because most of them are really old like the town hall, and has been built with so much detail. This village looks like something out of a history book, but yet it looks modern. If that’s possible but anyway it really is amazing," I told her.
I was rambling.
I tended to do that sometimes when I was nervous. Anyway, now she probably thought I was strange like everyone always did when I started talking about how amazing old buildings were.
"I never really thought about this village like that. Maybe, it’s because I have lived here all my life so I’m just used to seeing the buildings all the time, but I see what you mean. I guess that they are really amazing."
My earphones finally found their way to my ears and I hit shuffle on my phone’s music player. I sat back in my seat, letting the pleasant music fill my ears as I looked out the window. There are no other ways for me to describe how beautiful this town was other than it really was breathtaking, that such old buildings were still in such good repair.
The bus turned around the corner passing a two storey farmhouse. A few of the farms behind the house were visible.
Although, I couldn’t really tell what they were used for, from here. There was also a wooden building that looked a lot like a stable of some kind. I turned back to face the house when a strange feeling entered me. It was telling me that this farmhouse was familiar to me, but I had never seen it before. It told me that I belonged here in this village but that made no sense.
A shiver went through my body just as the bus began to shake. Some girls screamed and other people shouted, "What is it?"
"Was it an earthquake?"
Then it suddenly stopped.
It didn’t make any sense, but somehow I knew that I had caused it. When I shivered it radiated through the bus causing it to move, but how could I do that? People couldn’t do things like that.
Of course, they can’t, but strange things always seemed to happen to me. Whether that be strange dreams, seeing things or just unexplained things. Strange occurrences like that just didn’t happen so maybe I was more than definitely going crazy. I paused my music.
"That was strange. Not once have we ever had an earthquake and it’s weird how it didn’t last very long," Kaitee said.
"Yeah, very strange," I said. It was very strange indeed...
