Chapter 21
The fairies had not yet returned and it was nearing the end of the month. Nick and I had decided that we should practice our powers some more, in attempts to finally learn to control our powers. We practiced none stop, first focusing on the powers we first discovered we had. We could now communicate images telepathically to each other when we weren’t even together. It seemed almost unbelievable that too people could do something like that, so much that my old self, the one who didn’t know about this hidden part of the world, would never had believed it. Next we practiced our more recently discovered powers.

Out in the mansion’s yard a few week days back we began to try and get in as much practice as we could before Nick and his family went to go visit their family next month for the Christmas holidays.

"Remember to relax and keep concentration," I said as Nick got ready to practice his earth powers.

He looked up to me to speak. "I remember, Vick," he told me and then looked back down at the grass.

Holding out his hand, he closed his eyes and took a deep breath. Then opened his eyes that were still fixated on the small area of ground under his hand. Slowly, a small bud began to grow from the dry half dead grass, until it was fully bloomed into a beautiful blue flower.

I couldn’t help but to smile when I said, "It’s beautiful and blue."

"Yeah," he agreed and picked it, pulling it at the bottom of the route. Then held it out to me. "A beautiful flower for a beautiful lady."

I took it from him and held it under my nose, sniffing. Then I pulled it away looking at it taking in it’s strange but beautiful appearance and marvelling at the fact that this flower grew from the soil close to winter. Magic was a spectacular thing, that I was beginning to grow fond of very quickly.

"Can you hold it a sec please?" I asked.

"Sure," Nick replied and I handed it to him as I began to stand up.

Once up on my feet, I looked down at the floor and did as Nick did before. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. When I reopened them, a gasp escaped my mouth. My feet were floating a couple of inches off the ground. I had wished I remained seating to do it, standing made it look like I was higher in the air than I actually was. Taking deep breaths trying to remain calm, all without closing my eyes, I didn’t dare take my gaze off of the ground. The breathing helped a little but not a lot. I managed to stay in the air a few seconds before I began to struggle to stay up right and felt as if I was going to fall forwards.

Seeing what was happening Nick jumped to his feet and that was it. I could no longer keep myself up. My heart began to race and my eyes widened as I let out a scream. I am going to hit the floor or crash into Nick, was all that I could think. I fell forwards I saw Nick hold out his arms. He caught me before I could hit the floor. Helping me to stand up straight again, he looked at me with concern.

"Are you alright?" He asked, let go of me.

"Yeah, I am now. Hovering just an inch off the floor is terrifying believe it or not," I replied.

"Oh, I believe it," he said and looked off in the distance as if he was picturing something in his mind.

Then he retuned to look at me as if he didn’t just do it, but I knew what ever he just thought of scared him. I could see it in his eyes and feel it coming from his mind, even though he tried his hardest to hide it. Although, I wasn’t entirely sure I gathered it had someting to do with his fear of heights.

"What’s the matter?" I wondered.

"Nothing, let’s just say I’m glad that I’m not the one with air powers or I’d never be able to master it," he answered.

"Because your fear of heights?"

"Yes, exactly that. You’re just hovering now but what about later you might start flying once you master hovering," he stated and then shivered. "No I must stop. Even thinking about it terrifies me," he added.

"Then don’t think about it. Let’s go back to practicing you powers. Let’s see what else you can do with earth other than just grow flowers," I told him.

"But you need to try yours again. Try and stay in the air longer," he said.

"And I will but I’m not quite ready to do it again not after nearly falling flat on my face," I pointed out.

"Okay," he agreed and then turned to face the tree that was nearly fully bare. There was only a few yellow leaves left to fall. He held out his hand, palm facing forwards. "Wait I don’t think I will be able to do anything with a dead tree. The soil was damp where I grew the flower from because of the rain last night but around the tree roots is completely dry now," he told me.

"Hang on a sec," I said as I thought of an idea.

I walked towards the tree and held my palm towards the ground near the tree roots. Closing my eyes I took deep breaths until my hand felt wet. When I reopened them I saw water streaming from my hand towards the roots and then began circling the tree making sure the water surround the tree completely. Once completely satisfied, I returned to standing beside Nick.

"Try now," I told him, so he did.

We both stared at the tree without saying a word as the remaining leaves returned to green. Then more and more began to grow. After the leaves blossom, started to cover the tree in pastel pink that stood out against the dark green of the leaves.

"Wow," was all I finally managed to say, finally as Nick lowered his hand.

"Yeah, wow indeed," he said. "Never did I think that I would be capable of things like this. It kinda makes me feel special," he added.

"You are. We both are. What we have a gift that we have to use for good," I stated.

"Yes, you’re right but these powers don’t make us any better than anyone else. These powers don’t change the fact that I’m a freak and a loser that nearly everyone in this town hates." I stepped closer to him and put my arms around him, turning him to face me.

"Nicki, the powers don’t make neither of us better, but even without them you are an incredibly, talented, intelligent and kind and if others can not see that then they are the losers not you," I told him.

He didn’t reply but just smiled at me. Then taking me by suprise he put his own arms around and then leaned down to kiss me. Remembering the last time he kissed me like this, I closed my eyes. Soon I felt his warm lips against mine, sending tingles into them that traveled through my entire body. I clung to him tighter, not wanting it to end even though I knew it would have to.

I had no idea how long had passed when we finished kissing, but the sun was beginning to set. It had to be several minutes. After we had finished though, we headed inside the mansion to wait for dinner because we knew it would be ready very soon. After we practiced again for a little while until it was time to go home.

Now, in present day Nick was packing to leave to go visit his family and I was seeing him in a few hours before he left. I had presents to give him and his family. We had promised each other to practice as much as we could alone over the holidays.

I was sat in my room listening to music on my phone and reading a book to pass the time, until Nick called.
