Chapter 4
Vicky
Where is he? I was worried. He said he would meet me in the canteen but he didn't come. Has something happened to him? I thought just as he walked in through the door. When he approached our table I noticed that his nose looked broken. Anger built up inside me, because of the thought someone actually did this to him.
Nick sat down on the chair next to me. I watched him sit down and continued to look at him as I spoke.
"What happened to you?"
"Nothing," he lied.
"Don't say nothing, when clearly something did. I can see you, Nick I'm not blind," I pointed out.
"It was Darren, Ash and their friends," He finally answered.
"Who is Darren and Ash?" I wondered. Although I had been here at this village school for nearly two months I still didn't know everyone's names.
"Darren is Katherine's boyfriend. Ash or Ashford is his best friend," Jess told me. I knew who he meant now. I had seen Katherine with a lad quite a few times.
They were both big lads and by big, I meant very tall and muscular. Nick was taller but a lot slimmer than them although, Nick was probably capable of beating them. But he wasn't capable of fighting so many unless he used his powers. He couldn't use his powers against them because they would find out he wasn't like them, and he wasn't able to control them yet.
"How many were they, including Ash and Darren?" I asked.
"Five. Why does it matter?"
"It matters because they didn't give you a fair advantage if they all joined in. It also matters because you are hurt. Your nose looks broken," I said.
"I'm sure it's not."
"Nick it looks bent," I pointed out.
"It's fine it doesn't even hurt no more," he said but I knew he was lying.
"Let me touch it then." I reached out and touched it delicately. He made a little scream of pain as I found where the bone had broke, I let go and he held his hands up near his nose.
Kaitee lifted her hand in the air which made the teacher walk toward us. "What's the matter?" She asked.
"Nick's nose is broken," Kaitee replied.
"Really, I didn't notice it when he walked in?" She asked.
"Yeah, take a look at it. It's bleeding," Jess answered. The teacher looked towards, Nick's nose.
"You're right it does. Who did this to you?" She wondered.
"It doesn't matter."
"Nick, it does matter. No one should be hurting you, and the person who has needed a serious talking too," she said, her face filled with concern.
"It was Darren and Ash," I said instead because I knew he wouldn't tell her.
"Right, thank you, Vicky. Nick come with me."
"To where?"
"To the nurse's office." Nick stood up and followed the teacher out of the classroom.
He didn't return for that lesson, in fact, he didn't come back at all. I think he the nurse had sent him to the hospital or home. As for Ash for and his friends, I didn't know what happened with them. Whether or not they got into trouble. I hoped so because it wasn't very nice what they did. I agreed that Nick shouldn't have sworn at Katherine but she made him mad.
The day was over now and I and my friends were waiting for the bus. I hoped it came soon. My phone beeped when I turned it back on, so I opened the text.
I had to go to the hospital and my mum said I couldn't come back to school. Text me when you get home.
So I had been right he did need to go to the hospital. I put my phone back into my blazer pocket and looked down the road. The bus was in the viewable distance. It would be here soon. When it arrived everyone climbed on and showed their passes. I followed after Kaitee and Aleysha to some seats. Aleysha didn't always get on the bus home because her mum picked her up, but she was still busy at work.
Tiredness was beginning to affect me that I was nearly dropping off to sleep on the bus. Aleysha had to keep talking to me to keep me awake. It was great for her though because she loved to talk. The reason why I was so tired was that I hadn't been able to sleep well for a while due to my injuries but I was beginning to get back into a good sleeping pattern. When I got home I wouldn't be able to go to sleep because I had a lot of work to do. I had to put the protection spells into place if I wanted to keep my friends and family safe. Who knew when the evil, ones would come again? The sooner I did the spells the better. Emma was coming around to my house to help mum and me. Hopefully, it wouldn't take long to do them.
The bus pulled up down the bottom of my street, sometime later, so I said goodbye to Aleysha and Kaitee and made my way off. I waved to them as the bus drove away and then I started to walk home. Once I got into my little garden, I took out my phone and texted, Nick.
I'm home now. I typed and hit send. If he didn't take me home I always texted him to tell him if I got home safe. It worked both ways because we both wanted to know. We had to make sure each other were safe very often because anyone could be after us. That was a downside of being a chosen one, evil humans and supernaturals wanted us dead so sometimes they came to the village to find us. How did they find us? Not everyone knew the village existed, but that was mainly ordinary humans that didn't have family members living there. Sometimes though they just happen to stumble upon the village, while they are in the search of the next town they can destroy and realise that we are here. This is what I came to figure out when they happen to find out we lived there.
As I entered the house my phone beeped again. I dropped my bag on the floor and I looked at my phone and saw the little message notification. I opened it and read.
That's good. It said with a little smiley face. I'm going to school tomorrow, so I'll come by yours in the morning.
Ok, I'll talk to you tomorrow then. Busy right now, I got some protection spells to do. I text back and put my phone back in my pocket.
Mum came out of the kitchen and looked over to me.
"I thought I heard you come in. Emma is in the kitchen getting some things ready," she told me. My mum had been walking around the room getting things ready and putting them on the dining table when she stopped to say hello to me. She looked as beautiful as ever. Her blonde hair was tied up in a messy bun and her white dress flowed delicately around her ankles.
I closed the door behind me and Emma came out of the kitchen. When she saw me she smiled before she spoke.
"Oh, hello, Vicky. Would you mind helping me take the rest of the things in the kitchen into the living room?" She asked me.
"I would love to help," I replied. Then I pushed open the door with enthusiasm and excitement rushing through my body like electricity. Inside I walked over to the witchy stuff.
Before I picked anything up, I glanced down at them. There were all sorts of plants, flowers and herbs, as well as candles and a whole manner of things. It smelt so earthy where I stood, and it made me even more excited to be creating some charms because I had never done anything like it before. I was beginning to feel what it was really like to be a witch and all my curious, normally hidden nature was seeping it's way out. I wanted to learn it all. For as long as I could remember I had been a fan of the supernatural and fantasy, now I knew that I could create magic myself, and learning to create charms was only the beginning of becoming a great- powerful witch like those in stories.
I picked up as much as I could carry and made my way to the living room. And a little sharp pain came in my broken arm so I stopped. It wasn't bad as it was before. It was nearly healed and soon I would be able to get my pot off.
"Are you okay, honey?" She asked me.
"I'm fine," I said and started walking again. I reached the table and placed the items on the table.
Then we made a start on the charms, mixing different herbs and plants as we chanted spells. The spell that my mum said was most effective would keep the evil ones from hurting them but it wouldn't last very long. It would run out in two weeks so we would have to do it again, which was going to be hard explaining to them because it required them to keep a little-scented pouch on them always, so I would have to keep giving them new ones. After we had finished I popped them in my school bag to give them out tomorrow, I just hoped they would keep a hold of them and not lose them.
Emma stayed for dinner before she left. She left before it got too dark, and promised she would call us when she got back to the castle.
***
Later that night after Emma had gone home she runs to let us know that she had gotten home safely. We had only got the phone put in two days ago. It was easier for people to get in touch with us because they had another number to call when our mobiles were out of signal.
My mum answered the call.
"Hello," she said into the speaker.
"Okay, goodnight," she added after a slight pause.
There was another pause before she ended the call and put the phone back.
"That was Emma, she just called to let us know that she got back home safely," she told me.
"That's good. Well, I'm off to bed now, see you tomorrow," I said.
"Okay, goodnight, Vicky," she said hugging me, lightly.
"Goodnight, mum."
I turned around when she let go of me and then started walking upstairs to the bathroom to brush my teeth. After that, I changed into my pyjamas and climbed into my nice comfy bed.
